1.Scope
1.1Thisspecificationcoversblackandhot-dippedgalva-nizedhot-formedweldedandseamlesscarbonsteelsquare,round,rectangular,orspecialshapestructuraltubingforwelded,riveted,orboltedconstructionofbridgesandbuild-ings,andforgeneralstructuralpurposes.
1.2Squareandrectangulartubingisfurnishedinsizes1to10in.(25.4to254mm)acrossflatsideswithwallthicknesses0.095to1.000in.(2.41to25.40mm),dependentuponsize;roundtubingisfurnishedinNPS1⁄2toNPS24(seeNote1)inclusive,withnominal(average)wallthicknesses0.109to1.000in.(2.77to25.40mm),dependentuponsize.Specialshapetubingandtubingwithotherdimensionsispermittedtobefurnished,providedthatsuchtubingcomplieswithallotherrequirementsofthisspecification.

5.1Thesteelshallbemadebyoneormoreofthefollowingprocesses:open-hearth,basic-oxygen,orelectric-furnace.5.2Whensteelsofdifferentgradesaresequentiallystrandcast,thesteelproducershallidentifytheresultanttransitionmaterialandremoveitusinganestablishedprocedurethatpositivelyseparatesthegrades.
6.Manufacture
6.1Thetubingshallbemadebyoneofthefollowingprocesses:seamless;furnace-buttwelding(continuousweld-ing);orelectric-resistanceweldingfollowedbyreheatingthroughoutthecrosssectionandhotformingbyareducingorshapingprocess,orboth.
7.HeatAnalysis
7.1EachheatanalysisshallconformtotherequirementsspecifiedinTable1forheatanalysis.
8.ProductAnalysis
8.1ThetubingshallbecapableofconformingtotherequirementsspecifiedinTable1forproductanalysis.
8.2Ifproductanalysesaremade,theyshallbemadeusingtestspecimenstakenfromtwolengthsoftubingfromeachlotof500lengths,orfractionthereof,ortwopiecesofflat-rolledstockfromeachlotofacorrespondingquantityofflat-rolledstock.MethodsandpracticesrelatingtochemicalanalysisshallbeinaccordancewithTestMethods,Practices,andTerminol-ogyA751.SuchproductanalysesshallconformtotherequirementsspecifiedinTable1forproductanalysis.
8.3Ifbothproductanalysesrepresentingalotfailtoconformtothespecifiedrequirements,thelotshallberejected.8.4Ifonlyoneproductanalysisrepresentingalotfailstoconformtothespecifiedrequirements,productanalysesshallbemadeusingtwoadditionaltestspecimenstakenfromthelot.Bothadditionalproductanalysesshallconformtothespecifiedrequirementsorthelotshallberejected.
9.TensileRequirements

10.1Thebendtestshallbemadeonsquareorrectangulartubingmanufacturedinaccordancewiththisspecification.10.2Thebendtestspecimenshallbetakenlongitudinallyfromthetubing,andshallrepresentthefullwallthicknessofmaterial.Itshallbepermissibleforthesidesofthebendtesttohavetheircornersroundedouttoaradiusof1⁄16in.(1.59mm)maximum.
10.3Thebendtestspecimenshallstandbeingbentcoldthrough180°,withoutcrackingontheoutsideofthebentportion,toaninsidediameterwhichshallhavearelationtothethicknessofthespecimenasprescribedinTable3.

13.1Onetensiontestasspecifiedin15.2shallbemadefromalengthoftubingrepresentingeachlot.
13.2ThebendtestasspecifiedinSection10shallbemadeononelengthofsquareorrectangulartubingrepresentingeachlot.
13.3Theterm“lot”shallapplytoalltubesofthesamespecifiedsizethatareproducedfromthesameheatofsteel.14.Retests
14.1IftheresultsofthemechanicaltestsrepresentinganylotfailtoconformtotheapplicablerequirementsspecifiedinSections9and10,thelotshallberejectedorretestedusingadditionaltubingofdoubletheoriginalnumberfromthelot.Thelotshallbeacceptableiftheresultsofallsuchretestsrepresentingthelotconformtothespecifiedrequirements.
14.2Ifoneorbothoftheretestsspecifiedin14.1failtoconformtotheapplicablerequirementsspecifiedinSections9and10,thelotshallberejectedor,subsequenttothemanu-facturerheattreating,reworking,orotherwiseeliminatingtheconditionresponsibleforthefailure,thelotshallbetreatedasanewlotandtestedaccordingly.
15.TestMethod
15.1TensiontestspecimensshallconformtotheapplicablerequirementsofTestMethodsandDefinitionsA370,AnnexA2.
15.2Tensiontestspecimensshallbefull-sizelongitudinaltestspecimensorlongitudinalstriptestspecimens.Forweldedtubing,anylongitudinalstriptestspecimensshallbetakenfromalocationatleast90°fromtheweldandshallbepreparedwithoutflatteninginthegagelength.Longitudinalstriptestspecimensshallhaveallburrsremoved.Tensiontestspecimensshallnotcontainsurfaceimperfectionsthatwouldinterferewithproperdeterminationofthetensileproperties.
15.3Theyieldstrengthcorrespondingtoanoffsetof0.2%ofthegagelengthortoatotalextensionunderloadof0.5%ofthegagelengthshallbedetermined.
16.GalvanizedCoatings
16.1Forstructuraltubingrequiredtobehot-dippedgalva-nized,suchcoatingshallcomplywiththerequirementscon-tainedinSpecificationA53/A53M,exceptthatthemanufac-turershalladditionallyhavetheoptionofdeterminingthecoatingweightusingonlythevaluesobtainedforthecoatingontheoutsidesurfaceofthetubing.
17.Inspection
17.1Alltubingshallbeinspectedattheplaceofmanufac-turetoensureconformancewiththerequirementsofthisspecification.
17.2Thestructuraltubingshallbefreeofdefectsandshallhaveacommerciallysmoothfinish.
17.2.1Surfaceimperfectionsshallbeclassedasdefectswhenoneormoreofthefollowingconditionsexist:
17.2.1.1Thedepthoftheimperfectionsexceeds15%ofthecalculatednominalwallthickness.
17.2.1.2Theimperfectionsmateriallyaffecttheappearanceofthestructuraltubing.
17.2.1.3Atanylocation,thelengthoftheimperfections,measuredinthetransversedirection,incombinationwiththeirdepthmateriallyreducethetotalcrosssectionalareaofthestructuraltubing.
17.2.2Itshallbepermissiblefordefectshavingadepthnotinexcessof331⁄3%ofthecalculatednominalwallthicknesstoberepairedbywelding,subjecttothefollowingconditions:17.2.2.1Thedefectshallbecompletelyremovedbychip-pingorgrindingtosoundmetal,
17.2.2.2Therepairweldshallbemadeusingalow-hydrogenweldingprocess,and
17.2.2.3Theprojectingweldmetalshallberemovedtoproduceaworkmanlikefinish.
17.3Unlessotherwisespecifiedinthepurchaseorder,structuraltubingshallbefurnishedwithsquarecutends.The
burrshallbeheldtoaminimum.Whensospecifiedinthepurchaseorder,theburrshallberemovedontheoutsidediameter,insidediameter,orboth.
18.Rejection
18.1Itshallbepermissibleforthepurchasertoinspecttubingreceivedfromthemanufacturerandrejectanytubingthatdoesnotmeettherequirementsofthisspecification,basedupontheinspectionandtestmethodsoutlinedherein.Thepurchasershallnotifythemanufacturerofanytubingthathasbeenrejected,andthedispositionofsuchtubingshallbesubjecttoagreementbetweenthemanufacturerandthepur-chaser.
18.2Itshallbepermissibleforthepurchasertosetasideanytubingthatisfoundinfabricationorinstallationwithinthescopeofthisspecificationtobeunsuitablefortheintendedenduse,basedontherequirementsofthisspecification.Thepurchasershallnotifythemanufacturerofanytubingthathasbeensetaside.Suchtubingshallbesubjecttomutualinvesti-gationastothenatureandseverityofthedeficiencyandtheformingorinstallationconditions,orboth,involved.Thedispositionofsuchtubingshallbesubjecttoagreementbetweenthemanufacturerandthepurchaser.
19.Certification
19.1Whenspecifiedinthepurchaseorderorcontract,themanufacturershallfurnishtothepurchaseracertificateofcompliancestatingthattheproductwasmanufactured,sampled,tested,andinspectedinaccordancewiththisspeci-ficationandanyotherrequirementsdesignatedinthepurchaseorderorcontract,andwasfoundtomeetallsuchrequirements.Certificatesofcomplianceshallincludethespecificationnum-berandyearofissue.
19.2Whenspecifiedinthepurchaseorderorcontract,themanufacturershallfurnishtothepurchasertestreportsfortheproductshippedthatcontaintheheatanalysesandtheresultsofthetensiontestsrequiredbythisspecificationandthepurchaseorderorcontract.Testreportsshallincludethespecificationnumberandyearofissue.
19.3Asignatureornotarizationisnotrequiredoncertifi-catesofcomplianceortestreports;however,thedocumentsshallclearlyidentifytheorganizationsubmittingthem.Not-withstandingtheabsenceofasignature,theorganizationsubmittingthedocumentisresponsibleforitscontent.
19.4Acertificateofcomplianceortestreportprintedfrom,orusedinelectronicformfrom,anelectronicdatainterchange(EDI)shallberegardedashavingthesamevalidityasacounterpartprintedinthecertifyingorganization’sfacility.ThecontentoftheEDItransmitteddocumentshallconformtoanyexistingEDIagreementbetweenthepurchaserandthemanu-facturer.
20.ProductMarking
20.1Exceptasallowedby20.2,eachlengthofstructuraltubingshallbelegiblymarkedbyrolling,die-stamping,inkprinting,orpaintstencilingtoshowthefollowinginformation:manufacturer’sname,brand,ortrademark;size;andthespecificationdesignation(yearofissuenotrequired).
20.2Forstructuraltubinghavingaspecifiedoutsidediam-eterorlargeflatdimensionlessthan2in.(50.8mm),itshallbepermissiblefortheinformationlistedin20.1tobemarkedonatagsecurelyattachedtoeachbundle.
20.3BarCoding—Inadditiontotherequirementsin20.1and20.2,themanufacturershallhavetheoptionofusingbarcodingasasupplementaryidentificationmethod.Whenaspecificbarcodingsystemisspecifiedinthepurchaseorder,thatsystemshallbeused.
NOTE2—Intheabsenceofanotherbarcodingsystembeingspecifiedin
thepurchaseorder,itisrecommendedthatbarcodingbeconsistentwithAIAGStandardB-1.
21.Packaging,Marking,andLoading
21.1Whenspecifiedinthepurchaseorder,packaging,marking,andloadingshallbeinaccordancewithPracticesA700.22.Keywords
22.1steeltube;structuralsteeltubing
