1.Scope
1.1Thisspecificationcoversstainlesssteelwireandweldedwirereinforcementproducedfromhot-rolledstainlesssteelrod.Thestainlesssteelwireiscold-worked,drawnorrolled,plain(non-deformed)ordeformedoracombinationofde-formedandplain.Itisusedasconcretereinforcementforapplicationsrequiringresistancetocorrosionand/orcontrolledmagneticpermeability.Commonwiresizesanddimensionsarefoundinthisspecification.Actualwiresizesarenotrestrictedtothoseshowninthetables.
1.2SupplementS1describeshighstrengthwire,whichshallbefurnishedwhenspecificallyordered.Itshallbepermissibletofurnishhighstrengthwireinplaceofregularwireifmutuallyagreedtobythepurchaserandsupplier.
1.2.1Asupplementaryrequirement(S2)ofanoptionalnatureisprovided.Itshallapplyonlywhenspecifiedbythepurchaser.Inordertoobtainacorrosiontestedorcontrolledmagneticpermeabilityproduct,steelconformingtoSupple-mentaryRequirementS2shouldbeordered.
1.3Thevaluesstatedineitherinch-poundunitsorSIunitsaretoberegardedasstandard.Withinthetexttheinch-poundunitsareshowninparentheses.Thevaluesstatedineachsystemarenotexactequivalents;therefore,eachsystemmustbeusedindependentlyoftheother.Combiningvaluesmayresultinnonconformancewiththespecification.
1.4Thechemicalcompositionofthesteel(stainlessgrade)shallbeselectedforsuitabilitytotheapplicationinvolvedbyagreementbetweenthemanufacturerandthepurchaser.UseSpecificationA276forchemicalrequirements.TheUNSdesignationsaretobeincludedwiththetypenumberandnotedinbrackets,i.e.austeniticstainlesssteelsasType304[S30400],304L[S30403],316[S31600],316L[S31603],316N[S31651],316LN[S31653]andduplexstainlesssteels,Types2205[S32205]and329[S32900].
NOTE1—Onlyausteniticandduplexstainlesssteelsareusuallyrecom-mendedforuseasreinforcementinconcretebecauseoftheirhighcorrosionresistance.Austeniticstainlesssteelshavegoodgeneralcorro-sionresistance,strengthcharacteristicswhichcanbeimprovedbycold
working,goodtoughnessandductilitypropertiesatlowtemperatures,andlowmagneticpermeability.Duplexstainlesssteelshavegenerallyacorrosionresistancegreaterthanthatofmostausteniticsteelsandaremagnetic.Otherstainlesssteelswithdifferentchemicalcompositionsthantheseriesandtypesmentionedabove,maybeusedforlessrestrictiveapplications.
1.5Wireforweldedwirereinforcementisgenerallymanu-facturedat520MPa(75ksi)yieldstrengthlevel.Otherstrengthlevelsshallbebyagreementbetweenthepurchaserandmanufacturer.

5.Materials
5.1Stainlesssteelwireforweldedwirereinforcementshallbecoldworked,eitherdrawnorrolledfromsteelrod,whichisrolledfromproperlyidentifiedheatsofmoldorstrandcaststeel.
5.2ColdworkedwireorrodusedinthemanufactureofstainlesssteelweldedreinforcementshallfollowthechemicalandphysicalrequirementsofSpecificationA276.
6.Manufacture
6.1Thewireorrodshallbeassembledbyautomaticmachinesorbyothersuitablemechanicalmeanswhichwillassureaccuratespacingandalignmentofallwiresofthefinishedweldedwirereinforcement.Thefinishedweldedwirereinforcementshallbefurnishedinflatorbentsheetsorinrollsasspecifiedbythepurchaser.
6.2Longitudinalandtransversewiresshallbesecurelyconnectedateveryintersectionbyaprocessofelectrical-resistanceweldingwhichemploystheprincipleoffusioncombinedwithpressure.

7.MechanicalPropertyRequirements—DeformedWire,ExceptasNotedforPlainWire(MaterialforWeldedWire)
7.1Tensile—Wirefortheproductionofweldedwire,de-formed,isdescribedinSection6.Tensiletestsshallbemadeonwirecutfromtheweldedwireandtestedeitheracrossorbetweenthewelds;nolessthan50%shallbeacrosswelds.Tensiletestsacrossaweldshallhavetheweldedjointlocatedapproximatelyatthecenterofthewirebeingtestedandthecrosswireformingtheweldedjointshallextendapproximately25mm(1in.)beyondeachsideoftheweldedjoint.

7.3.4Thematerialshallbedeemedtoconformtotherequirementsforweldshearstrengthiftheaverageofthefoursamplescomplieswiththevaluestipulatedin7.3.Iftheaveragefailstomeettheprescribedvalue,alltheweldsacrossthespecimenshallthenbetested.Theweldedwireshallbeacceptableiftheaverageofallweldsheartestvaluesacrossthespecimenmeetstheprescribedminimumvalue.8.WeldShearTestApparatusandMethods
8.1Astheweldsinweldedwirecontributetothebondingandanchoragevalueofthewiresinconcrete,itisimperativethattheweldacceptancetestsbemadeinajigwhichwillstresstheweldinamannersimilartowhichitisstressedinconcrete.Inordertoaccomplishthis,theverticalwireinthejigmustbestressedinanaxisclosetoitscenterline.Alsothehorizontalwiremustbeheldcloselytotheverticalwire,andinthesamerelativeposition,soastopreventrotationofthehorizontalwire.Whentheweldedwireisdesignedwithdifferentwiresizes,thelargerdiameterwireisthe“verticalwire”whentested(seeFig.1).
8.2Fig.1showsthedetailsofatypicaltestingjigtogetherwithtwoanvils,whichmakeitpossibletotestweldsforwireupto19.05mm(3⁄4in.)indiameter.Thistestingjigcanbeusedinmosttensiontestingmachinesandshouldbehunginaballandsocketarrangementatthecenterofthemachine.This,orasimilarlyeffectivefixturedesignedonthesameprinciple,shallbeacceptable.
8.3Testspecimensshallbeinsertedthroughthenotchintheanvilusingthesmallestnotchavailableinwhichtheverticalwirewillfitloosely.Theverticalwireshallbeincontactwiththesurfaceofthefreerotatingrollerswhilethehorizontalwireshallbesupportedbytheanviloneachsideoftheslot.Thebottomjawsofthetestingmachineshallgripthelowerendoftheverticalwireandtheloadshallbeappliedatarateofstressingnottoexceed686MPa/min,(100000psi/min).

9.Dimensions
9.1Width—Thewidthofweldedwireshallbeconsideredtobethecenter-to-centerdistancebetweenoutsidelongitudinalwires.Thepermissiblevariationshallnotexceed13mm(1⁄2in.)greaterorlessthanthespecifiedwidth.Incasethewidthofflatsheetsorrollsisspecifiedastheoverallwidth(tip-to-tiplengthofcrosswires),thewidthshallnotvarymorethan625mm(61in.)fromthespecifiedwidth.Whenmeasurementsinvolveaconvolutedwire,themeasurementshallbemadetotheapproximatecenterofthesinusoidalwaveshape.
9.2Length—Theoveralllengthofflatsheets,measuredonanywire,mayvary625mm(61in.),or1%,whicheverisgreater.
9.3Overhangofthetransversewiresshallnotprojectbeyondthecenterlineofeachlongitudinaledgewiremorethanadistanceof25mm(1in.),unlessotherwisespecified.Whentransversewiresarespecifiedtoprojectaspecificlengthbeyondthecenterlineofalongitudinaledgewire,thepermissiblevariationshallnotexceed13mm(1⁄2in.)greaterorlessthanthespecifiedlength.
9.4Thepermissiblevariationinweightofanywireinthefinishedweldedwireshallconformtothetolerancesprescribedforthewirebeforefabricationinthisspecification,withthefollowingexceptions:
9.4.1Unlessotherwiseprecludedbythepurchaser,themanufacturershallbepermittedtoapplyover-sizedwire(notunder-sized).Inallcaseswheresuchoversteelingispracticed,theproducershallidentifytheweldedwirewiththestyleoriginallyordered.
9.5Theaveragespacingofwiresshallbesuchthatthetotalnumberofwirescontainedinasheetorrollisequaltoorgreaterthanthatdeterminedbythespecificspacing,butthecenter-to-centerdistancebetweenindividualwiresmayvarynotmorethan6mm(1⁄4in.)fromthespecifiedspacing.Itisunderstoodthatsheetsofweldedwireofthespecifiedlength

11.2Testspecimensfordeterminingweld-shearpropertiesshallbeobtainedbycuttingfromthefinishedweldedwire,afullwidthsection,ofsufficientlengthtoperformtestingdescribedin7.3.3.
11.3Measurementsforconformancetodimensionalchar-acteristicsshallbemadeonfullsheetsorrolls.
11.4Ifanytestspecimenexhibitsobviousimperfections,itmaybediscardedandanotherspecimensubstituted.12.NumberofTests
12.1Onetestforconformancetotensilestrengthandbendrequirementsshallbemadeforeach7000m2(75000ft2)ofweldedwireorremainingfractionthereof.Fortestingpriortofabrication,onetestforeach18Mg(20tons)ofwireshallbemade.
12.2Onetestforconformancetoweldshearstrengthrequirementshallbemadeforeach28000m2(300000ft2)orremainingfractionthereof.13.Inspection
13.1Theinspectorrepresentingthepurchasershallhavefreeentryatalltimes,whileworkonthecontractofthepurchaserisbeingperformed,toallpartsofthemanufacturer’smillthatconcernthemanufactureofthematerialordered.Themanufacturershallaffordtheinspectorallreasonablefacilitiestoassurethatthematerialisbeingfurnishedinaccordancewiththisspecification.
13.2Exceptforyieldstrength,alltestsandinspectionsshallbemadeattheplaceofmanufacturepriortoshipment,unlessotherwisespecified.Suchtestshallbesoconductedasnottointerfereunnecessarilywiththeoperationofthemill.
13.3Themanufacturermaysatisfycompliancewithyieldstrengthrequirementsofthisspecificationbytestinginitscertifiedlaboratoryorarecognizedindependentlaboratory,or
thepurchaser’srepresentativemaymakethetestatthemillifsuchtestingdoesnotunnecessarilyinterferewithmillopera-tions.
13.4ForU.S.GovernmentProcurementOnly—Exceptasotherwisespecifiedinthecontract,thecontractorisresponsiblefortheperformanceofallinspectionandtestrequirementsspecifiedherein.Exceptasotherwisespecifiedinthecontract,thecontractormayuseitsownfacilitiesormayuseothersuitablefacilitiesfortheperformanceoftheinspectionandtestrequirementsspecifiedherein,unlessdisapprovedbythepur-chaseratthetimeofpurchase.Thepurchasershallhavetherighttoperformanyoftheinspectionsandtestsatthesamefrequencyassetforthinthisspecificationwheresuchinspec-tionsaredeemednecessarytoassurethatmaterialconformstoprescribedrequirements.
14.RejectionandRetest
14.1Materialthatdoesnotmeettherequirementsofthisspecificationmayberejected.Unlessotherwisespecified,anyrejectionshallbereportedtothemanufacturerwithinfivedaysfromthetimeofselectionoftestspecimens.
14.2Incaseaspecimenfailstomeetthetensionorbendtest,thematerialshallnotberejecteduntiltwoadditionalspecimenstakenfromotherwiresinthesamesheetorrollhavebeentested.Thematerialshallbeconsideredasmeetingthespecificationinrespecttoanyprescribedtensileproperty,providedthetestedaverageforthethreespecimens,includingthespecimenoriginallytested,isequaltoorexceedstherequiredminimumfortheparticularpropertyinquestionandprovidedfurtherthatnoneofthethreespecimensdevelopslessthan80%oftherequiredminimumforthetensilepropertyinquestion.Thematerialshallbeconsideredasmeetingthisspecificationinrespecttobendtestrequirements,providedbothadditionalspecimenssatisfactorilypasstheprescribedbendtest.
14.3Weldedjointsshallwithstandnormalshippingandhandlingwithoutbecomingbroken,butthepresenceofbrokenwelds,regardlessofcause,shallnotconstitutecauseforrejectionunlessthenumberofbrokenweldspersheetexceeds1%ofthetotalnumberofjointsinasheet,orifthematerialisfurnishedinrolls,1%ofthetotalnumberofjointsin14m2(150ft2)ofweldedwireand,furthermore,providednotmorethanonehalfthepermissiblemaximumnumberofbrokenweldsarelocatedonanyonewire.
14.4Intheeventofrejectionbecauseoffailuretomeettheweldshearrequirements,fouradditionalspecimensshallbetakenfromfourdifferentsheetsorrollsandtestedinaccor-dancewithSection8.Iftheaverageofalltheweldsheartestsperformeddoesnotmeettherequirement,thematerialshallberejected.
14.5Intheeventofrejectionbecauseoffailuretomeettherequirementsfordimensions,theamountofmaterialrejectedshallbelimitedtothoseindividualsheetsorrollswhichfailtomeetthisspecification.
14.6Dullgraysurface,surfaceseams,orsurfaceirregulari-tiessuchasoutlinedinSection10shallnotbecauseforrejectionprovidedtheminimumweldedwiredimensions,cross-sectionalarea,tensileproperties,andweldshearstrengthofahandwire-brushedtestspecimenarenotlessthanthe
requirementsofthisspecification.Theheightofdeformationsabovetheminimumheightrequirementsshallnotbecauseforrejection.
14.7Rehearing—Rejectedmaterialsshallbepreservedforaperiodofatleasttwoweeksfromthedateofinspection,duringwhichtimethemanufacturermaymakeclaimforarehearingandretesting.
15.Certification
15.1Ifoutsideinspectioniswaived,amanufacturer’scer-tificationthatthematerialhasbeenmanufacturedinaccor-dancewithandmeetstherequirementsofthisspecificationshallbethebasisofacceptanceofthematerial.Thecertifica-tionshallincludethespecificationnumber,year-dateofissue,andrevisionletter,ifany.
15.2Thisconformanceispredicatedupontestingandac-ceptanceofwirepriortofabrication,coupledwithrandomsheartestingduringproduction.Becauseofwarehousingandstockingproblems,noeffortsarenormallytakentosupplyactualtestdataonmaterialshipped.Ifthisisdeemedessential,outsideinspectionshouldbeutilized.
15.3WhenSupplementS1ofSpecificationsA82orA496isspecifiedforthematerial,testresultsforyieldstrength,tensilestrength,andbendtestsshallbereported(S1.3.1ofSpecificationA82,S1.3.1ofSpecificationA496).
16.PackagingandPackageMarking
16.1Thesizeofthewire,ASTMdesignation,andnameormarkofthemanufacturershallbemarkedonatagsecurelyattachedtoeachcoilofwire.
16.2Unlessotherwisespecified,packaging,markingandloadingforshipmentshallbeinaccordancewithPracticesA700.
16.3Whenweldedwireisfurnishedinflatsheets,itshallbeassembledinbundlesofconvenientsizecontainingnotmorethan150sheetsandsecurelyfastenedtogether.
16.4Whenweldedwireisfurnishedinrolls,eachrollshallbesecuredsoastopreventunwindingduringshippingandhandling.
16.5Eachbundleofflatsheetsandeachrollshallhaveattachedtheretoasuitabletagbearingthenameofthemanufacturer,descriptionofthematerialandsuchotherinformationasmaybespecifiedbythepurchaser.
