三、阅读理解 (每小题2分,共16分) A
Can trees talk? Yes, but not in words. Scientists have reason to believe that trees
2
do communicate with each other. Not long ago, researchers learned some surprising things. First a willow tree attacked in the woods by caterpillars (毛虫) changed the chemistry of its leaves and made them taste so terrible that they got tired of the leaves and stopped eating them. Then even more astonishing, the tree sent out a special smell---a signal (信号) causing its neighbors to change the chemistry of their own leaves and make them less tasty.
Communication, of course, doesn’t need to be in words. We can talk to each other by smiling, raising our shoulders and moving our hands. We know that birds and animals use a whole vocabulary of songs, sounds, and movements. Bees dance their signals, flying in certain patterns that tell other bees where to find nectar (花蜜) for honey. So why shouldn’t trees have ways of sending message?

We spent a day in the country, picking wild flowers. Our car looked like a flower shop inside! On the way home we had to stop at traffic lights, and then my wife noticed the cupboard.
It was tall and narrow, and it stood outside a furniture shop. “Buy it,” she said at once. “We’ll carry it home on the roofrack (行李架). I’ve always wanted one like that.”
What could I do? Ten minutes later I was £20 poorer, and the cupboard was tied on to the roofrack. The police even stopped traffic to let us through. Carrying furniture was a good idea.
After a time my wife said,” There is a long line of cars behind. Why don’t they overtake, I wonder?”
In fact a police car did overtake. The two officers inside looked at us seriously as they passed. But then with great kindness, they led us through the rush-hour traffic. The police car stopped at our village church. One of the officers came to me.
I was puzzled. “Thanks, officer,” I said. “You’ve been very kind. I have just down the road.”
He was staring at our load: first at the flowers, then at the cupboard. “Well,
3
well,” he said, laughing, “It’s a cupboard you’ve got here! We thought it was…er, something else.”
My wife began to laugh. Then the truth hit me like a stone between the eyes. I smiled at the officer. “Yes, it’s a cupboard, but thanks again.” I drove home as fast as I could.

Smaller babies tend to have lower IQs, even if the children are in the normal weight range, a new study shows.
While the differences are too small to have any practical significance for individuals(个体), they might be important at a population level.
Researchers at Columbia University and the New York Academy of Medicine have examined the relationship between birth weight and intelligence measured at age seven in over 3,000 children in the normal weight range.
They found that on average, IQ at age seven was directly related to birth weight, even after factors such as the mother’s age, race, education and socioeconomic status(社会经济地位) were taken into consideration.
Many studies have shown low birth weight babies (those born weighting less than 2,500 grams) have lower IQ test scores at school age — and the smaller the babies at birth, the larger the IQ deficit(不足).
There is also previous evidence that the association(关联) could apply to normal birth weight children (more than 2,500 grams) as well, but biases(偏见) in past studies from differences in family environment might have twisted the results.
The new study showed the association between birth weight and IQ was stronger in boys than girls, with a 1,000g increase in birth weight related to a 4.6 increase in IQ among boys but only 2.8 points in girls.
The authors say differences in IQ of this size are small and of no great importance to individual children.

五、阅读回答问题(每小题2分,共6分)
Reading for pleasure is the easiest way to become a better reader in English. It is also the most important way.
Some students say they don’t want to read for pleasure. They say they want to use their time to learn the rules of the language and new words. They say that pleasure reading is too easy.
Many experts (专家) say pleasure reading is very important for learning English. Dr. Stephen Krashen, a famous expert on learning languages, says that pleasure reading helps you learn many important things about English. Students learn more grammar and more words when they read for pleasure. They also learn more about good writing.
Dr. Krashen tells us that pleasure reading helps each student in a different way. Each student needs to learn something different. Pleasure reading makes it possible for each student to learn what he or she needs.
Reading for pleasure is not the same as studying. When you read for pleasure, you choose your own books, and you don’t have to remember everything. There are no tests on your pleasure reading books. Pleasure reading will help you:
●learn how English speakers use English ●read faster in English
●find examples of good writing in English ●learn new words
●learn about the cultures (文化) of English speakers
