On the Price of Pollution

Honorable judges, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, Good morning! It is a great honor to share with you my views on the price of pollution.

Recently, with the expanding of modernization, we do reap great benefits. Meanwhile, there is a growing awareness that we are seeking for advancement at the cost of polluting our habitat. When it comes to this topic, some maintain that the current situation isn’t that severe while the opponents urge that measures should be taken in time. In my view, mankind has already been affected by polluting the environment, as a result of which, an increasing number of natural disasters, weird diseases and extinction of species cost us a high price.

First and foremost, the large amount of poisonous gas produced by factories, cars and so on, has contaminated our atmosphere. This problem lays a latent danger for us because air is indispensable for human to survive. We need to breathe oxygen to sustain the basic requirement for our bodies. The polluted air not only does harm to our health but also causes respiratory disturbance.

Furthermore, the water isn’t clear as it used to be. As we all know, the fresh water available for drinking only accounts for 3 percent of our planet. However, it’s reported that most fresh water resources have been polluted by chemicals and we are going through water crisis. It’s clear that the price of pollution falls on the shoulders of all creatures in nature.

Besides, nuclear pollution, another currently heated-discussed pollution, can bring about disasters with an extensive and enduring aftermath. Take the unprecedented nuclear accident in Japan for example; the radioactive dust stirred the panic among local residents

and people overseas. Moreover, as the world’s economy connects close together, Japan’s catastrophe will still cause the whole world to pay a price for the nuclear pollution.

We humans wanted to manipulate nature, but ended up being manipulated by it. It’s high time we took measures to protect our planet, and put special emphasis on developing an environmental-friendly lifestyle. Only in this way can we save ourselves and be in harmony with our mother earth!
