Step 2 Presentation
T: Read the passage and underline the sentences with subjunctive mood.

Liu Xiang won his third Asian 110-meter hurdles championship! Looking back on the 2008 Olympic Games, Liu limped off the track due to injury even before he started running, leaving millions of Chinese astonished and disappointed. Liu apologized in public for his withdrawal, “I didn’t know why things turned out this way. I wanted to hang on, but I couldn’t. It was unbearable. If I had finished the race, I would have risked my tendon...” Liu did make the right decision. . If he hadnt given up then, he would have got worse injured
After Liu dropped out of the race, China’s Internet was filled with comments that ranged from sympathy to suspicion. It is hard to imagine how much Liu suffered. Luckily, he didnt lose heart. “I never quit easily,” he said,\" I believe I will come back.” Yes, he made it. If he hadnt been so determined, he wouldnt have succeeded again.
Liu is really a man worth respecting. We should learn how to face hardship in life from him. If you were to meet with difficulties in the future, would you stick to your goal as Liu Xiang does? And if you were Liu Xiang now, what would you do, to retire and live a comfortable life or to struggle for the next championship?
T: Could you tell me the sentences using subjunctive mood in the first two paragraphs.
S1: If I had finished the race, I would have risked my tendon. S2: If he hadnt given up then, he would have got worse injured. S3: If he hadnt been so determined, he wouldnt have succeeded again. T: Great! Could you find the similarities in the three sentences?
S4: In the if-clause, had- done form are used, and in the main clause, would+have done form are used.
T: Good. Could you guess what tense the sentences are related to ? S5: I guess it’s the simple past tense. Because all the things happened.

T: oh! So exact!But besides “would”, we can also choose “should”/ “could”/ “might” in the main clause. Which one to choose depends on the meaning of the word. So we can get the first tip

T: Can you draw a similar conclusion? Any volunteers?
S4: I want to have a try. Of the two sentences, the first one is related to future tense. In if- clause, it use “were to+ do”, and in main clause, “would+do” is used.
T: Right. And in the if –clause, we can also replace “were to+do” with “should+do” and “did”
S5: The second one I think are concerned with present tense. In if-clause, it use “did(were)” and “would+do” is used in the main clause.
T: Great! The main clause related to the present tense is the same as the future tense.

S3: If I had a lot of money, I would buy a house for my parent. T: Great! You parents are honored to have a son like you. S4:If I had a lot of money, I would put it in the bank.
T: Wise girl! You are good at managing money. You can also buy what you want with the interest.
S5:If he had driven more carefully, he would not have had the car accident yesterday.
S6:If I had learnt how to swim, I would not have trapped in this island.

S4: If I won the lottery some day, I would travel to London to watch the Olympics. T: Good idea! But you should win it before July 28th 2012, or it’s too late.
Step 3 Summarize what we have learned today by the students themselves.
Make sentences using subjunctive mood in if-clauses. Topics:

present your opinion to the whole class tomorrow..

【教学点评】
这堂语法课的教学内容是if 条件句引起的虚拟语气及其在过去,现在,将来三种时态中的呈现。每一教学环节的设置理念、教学内容以及整体的教学步骤,思路清晰。我谈下列几点感受:
首先,贴近学生。在“呈现”环节中,首先列举了痞子蔡在《第一次亲密接触》中的两段话,“假如我„„, 我会„„, 可是我没有,所以我不能。”在激发学生好奇心的同时,明确“wish”与“fact” 两者的区别。另一个呈现内容,关于刘翔的简介,也非常贴近学生的关注点,而且与教学内容紧密相连,而且能与时俱进,关注学生的兴趣点。
其次,学生的参与度高。在“操练”环节中,在短文中找出if虚拟语气句,并分类整理,这个呈现环节本身已经达到了认知目的。在设计控制性练习时,她遵循由易到难,“跳一跳,摘桃子”的原则,让学生的学习过程始终有成就感,极大激发了学生的学习热情。因此,兴趣产生于成就感。
最后,对教材进行了取舍。新课标教材的特点就是在规定了基本的教学目标的同时,提供了大量的语言材料,让教师能有所取舍。特别是语法知识的落实过程中,我们更应大胆删减添加。只要学生能认识语法现象,能用语法知识监控自己的语言学习与使用,教学目的就达到了。
总之,这堂课是成功的。老师轻松,学生情绪高昂,教学重点突出,教学过程实效。
