My Summer Camp Adventure
The last day of school was finally here! I couldn't wait for summer vacation to start. My best friend Alex and I had been looking forward to going to Camp Wildwood all year long. We had attended the camp every summer since we were in first grade, and it was always the highlight of our summer.
On July 2nd, my mom helped me pack my backpack and duffel bag with all the supplies I would need for a week at camp - t-shirts, shorts, socks, underwear, swimsuits, sunscreen, bug spray, a raincoat, a flashlight, and of course, my lucky teddy bear Bucky that I've had since I was a baby. I also packed my journal to write about my camp adventures.
The next morning, my dad drove Alex and me to the camp bus pickup location. There were already a bunch of other kids from our school there with their parents. I saw my friends Sophia, Michael, and Emma and we started chatting excitedly about all the fun we were going to have at camp.
Finally, the big yellow school bus pulled up and the camp counselors started calling out our names to check us in. Alex and I made sure to get seats near the back of the bus with our friends.
As the bus pulled away, we all cheered and waved goodbye to our parents. Camp, here we come!
The bus ride took about an hour. We played games like I Spy and 20 Questions to pass the time. We also sang silly camp songs that all the returning campers already knew by heart. When we finally pulled up to the Camp Wildwood entrance, we could see the beautiful lake and forest surrounding the cabins and activities fields. This was going to be awesome!
We grabbed our bags and followed the head counselor, who told corny jokes the whole way, to the central campfire area where we would get our cabin assignments. Alex and I crossed our fingers, hoping we would get to be in the same cabin like the past few years. Yes! We were both assigned to Cabin 7 along with Sophia and Emma. This was going to be the best week ever. After dropping our stuff off in the cabin, we headed to the mess hall for a camp lunch of hamburgers, hotdogs, chips, and bug juice (a weird punch camp places always seem to serve). After eating, we had some free time so we went on a little hike around the lake with our cabin mates. The forest looked like something from a fairy tale with sunlight peeking through the tall trees. We even saw a deer drinking from the lake!
That evening after dinner, we had our first campfire complete with s'mores and sung campfire songs with a counselor strumming a guitar. Under the starry sky, we told ghost stories that gave us goosebumps. When it was getting late, we headed back to our cabin for showers and bed. Even though we were a bit homesick that first night, being in the cozy cabin with my friends made me feel better. I couldn't wait to see what camp adventures awaited us in the coming days.
Over the next few days, we did so many fun activities that I could barely keep track. We went canoeing and caught little fish and frogs in the lake. We went on a nature hike and learned about different plants, trees, and animals. We did arts and crafts like friendship bracelets, dream catchers, and painted flower pots. We played endless games of capture the flag, kickball, and had relays and tug-of-war competitions between the cabins. My favorite activity though was the zipline course. Even though I was a little nervous at first being so high up, the counselors helped me feel safe. Soaring through the air above the trees with the wind in my face was an incredible thrill! Afterwards, we all got ice cream sandwiches as a reward for being brave.
On our last night, we had a big camp talent show. Some kids sang pop songs, some told jokes, and our cabin did a silly skit that had everyone cracking up. We ended the night with one final campfire. As we watched the glowing embers slowly fade, we passed around a cardboard tube to anonymously share our favorite camp memories from the week. It was so sweet reading what everyone loved most. I felt so lucky to have such an amazing group of friends.
The next morning, we were all laughing and crying at the same time, happy for the incredible week we had but sad that it was over. We packed up our belongings and headed to the bus, exchanging addresses and phone numbers with our new friends from other cabins. The rides home always feels SO long compared to the ride there. My mind was already drifting, making plans for us all to meet up at the pool or movies once we got home.
As excited as I am to sleep in my own bed tonight, I already can't wait to go back to Camp Wildwood next summer. The friendships, the adventures, the freedom of being out in nature for a week - it's just impossible to beat. This was definitely my best camp experience so far. But maybe I'm a little biased since it's still so fresh in my mind. I just know that every summer will
hold a new pack of incredible memories at my favorite place in the world. Thanks Camp Wildwood, I'll see you again soon!
