[Also in Division D1] Apparatus for separating articles 1, e.g.garments secured such as by sewing, to a band 3, e.g. of elastic comprises a feed means 7for advancing the band with articles secured thereto, a cutting device 8 for cutting theband between the articles, first photo-electric sensing means P1 for sensing the trailingedge of an article and second photo-electric sensing means P2 for sensing gaps betweenarticles passing the cutting device and arranged to operate the cutting device only afterthe first sensing means has sensed the trailing edge of the article determining the gapsensed by the second sensing means. The articles are initially laid on a table 2 in spacedrelation and a band of stretched elastic superimposed over the articles, the elastic beingfed from a reel 4 and a tensioning device 5; the articles and stretched band are fed past asewing device 6 by the feed means 7. As the trailing edge of an article 1 passes thephotocell P1, a signal is passed via a relay unit 11 to a relay A causing contacts A2thereon to complete a circuit from a second relay unit 12 and a solenoid-actuated pilotvalve V1 controlling a compressed air supply; the relay A is held in this position by

contacts A2 and a normallyclosed switch MS1. When the trailing edge of the articlepasses the photo-cell P2, a signal is fed therefrom to the relay unit 12 which in turn feedsan output signal to the solenoid 15 of valve V1; the valve V1 feeds compressed air to amain control valve V2 connected to an actuator 9 which then operates the cutting device.At the end of the stroke a switch MS2 is actuated thereby resetting the apparatus.
