Laptop puters are popular all over theworld. People use them everywhere. They connectpeople to their work place. In the United Statestoday, laptops also connect students to theirclassrooms.

Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptopputer program allowing students to studyschoolwork anywhere they want. Within five years,each of the 1500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are a part of a $10million puter program at Westlake. Students with laptops will also have aess to theInter.In addition, they will be able to use e-mail to “speak” with their teachers,classmates, or families.However, the most important part of the program is that students willbe able to use puters without going to puter labs. They can work with it anywhere theylike!

Because of the many changes in puter technology, laptop use in higher education isworkable. As laptops bee more powerful, they bee more similar to desktop puters.In addition, portable puters can connect students to not only

the Inter, but alsolibraries and other resources. State higher education officials are studying how laptops can helpstudents.

At Westlake College, more than 60 percent of the staff uses the puters. The laptops willallow all teachers to use puters in their lessons. As one Westlake teacher said, “Here we arein the middle of Virginia and we’re giving students a window on the world. They can seeeverything and do everything.”
