Brooke wanted a dollhouse and some sugar cookies. So the 6-year-old asked Alexa to get them. Alexa wasn’t her mom or babysitter. It was a voice-activated home assistant powered by AI(人工智能). And it made Brooke’s wishes come true. A few days later,

much to her parents’ surprise, a $ 170 dollhouse and four pounds of cookies showed up. They ate the cookies and gave away the dollhouse to a local hospital. And that’s not the end of the story. When a news reporter told the story of what happened on TV, Alexa devices(设备)in many

listeners’ homes woke up and tried to order dollhouses!

Alexa isn’t the only AI willing to serve you. Apple Home Pod has Siri, Google Home has its Assistant, and the upcoming Galaxy Home device will have Bixby. People who have these devices use them mainly for listening to music, checking the weather, and setting timers. According to a report from The Information, nowadays voice shopping is rare. But many scientists predict a boom(增长)in voice shopping in the near future. Is that a good thing?

. You can shout out an order as soon as you think of it, even if you are cooking, cleaning, or driving. In addition, people with disabilities who are unable to use a keyboard or mouse can shop without any help.

But voice shopping has its disadvantages. Unwanted dollhouses aren’t the biggest problem. It’s usually very easy to cancel an order or return products. The thing that worries some people is that these assistants are always listening. They have to be able to respond when you want them. So they listen for\" Alexa\" or \"OK Google\" or another order. When they hear it, they start recording the conversation. Some have worried about what happens shopping habits? And what if someone hacks(入侵)the device? The CIA found a way to hack smart TVs to turn them into spies that listen all the time. Others could do the same with any smart device.

What do you think? Are you ready to start voice shopping?

Tourism(旅游业)is one of the world’s largest industries. Many countries depend heavily on tourism as an important part of their economy(经济), while other countries-such as some of the smaller Caribbean island nations-are almost completely dependent on tourism.

Despite its economic advantages, tourism has disadvantages, too. While countries spend millions attracting tourists, they are also under the pressure that tourism brings.

One of the biggest problems is environmental. The building of roads and hotels can quickly destroy those very beautiful places. Development on wetlands, for example, influences wildlife; forests disappear as they are cleared to make way for buildings and to provide fuel(燃料). In addition, the tourist industry also puts a huge pressure on water people need. In dry Mediterranean areas, tourists use almost twice as much water as local people when swimming in the pool.

Tourism is also responsible for producing plenty of waste. Cruise ships in the Caribbean produce a lot of rubbish-more than 70, 000 tons each year. It even has an influence on places far away like the Himalayas, the word’s highest mountain, which has more than 100 tons of rubbish sitting on it.

In spite of these problems, tourism can be good for communities and the environment. The park-entrance fees(费用)are paid for the protection of places of interest or the animals. What’s

第7页(共23页)

more, tourism brings people closer to nature, and can give them a better understanding of the environment and the result of destroying it. This leads to pressure on local governments to protect these beautiful areas, and can result in the protection of endangered plants and animals. Also, it can provide people with more opportunities to find jobs in the tourist industry.

Although tourism has many advantages, it clearly has a bad influence as well. The challenge for local and national governments is to manage tourism so that communities can benefit economically, and yet at the same time, make sure that the tourist areas are kept for all to enjoy. 42. My parents run a small store in San Francisco, They always keep a big box by the entrance where people can donate(捐赠) something to our local food bank.

“For some reason, our food-donation box just isn’t filling up recently,” said my dad. “Maybe it’s time to think of a way to remind people about the food bank,” said my mom. “What about a talent show?”rny dad suggested. “OK, ” said my mom.

So while my parents posted information online, we kids made some signs. My friend Mareya came over to help out.

“I’d like to do an act in the show, but I don’t know what to do,” I told Mareya. “Well , since the food-bank thing is about sharing,” said Mareya, “why not write a song about that?”

“Writing a song is not a problem,” I said. “But it’s hard for me to sing it alone!” She said. “What if we sang it together?”

Since Mareya has the world’s prettiest voice and also happens to play the guitar, I agreed. Mareya and I practiced and practiced, and I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the morning of the performance, Mareya called that she had a stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.

“There’s no way I’m going on without you,” I told her. “You’ve worked so hard,” she said. “You’ll be great!”

3D printing is becoming more ancl more popular. We are now able to print things such as clothing, musical instruments and even cars. People and businesses are able to create the things they need very quickly and easily by using 3D printers.

But can you imagine printing food? Some scientists are trying to change the dining experience

completely by doing this. They hope that having a 3D printer in the kitchen will become as common as the blender or microwave. Scientists say that they are easy to use: you simply have to choose a recipe(食谱) and put the uncooked food“inks” into the printer to make the food you want. This means that it would be very quick and easy to create tasty and healthy meals.

Using 3D printers to create your meals would also be saving the environment, There would

be less need for traditional growing, shipping and packaging steps as food production would be a lot quicker and better. For example, tree leaves and insects could be turned into tasty products! Printing food could also help people who have a swallowing(香咽) trouble. They could program the printer to print softer kinds of their favorite foods so that they would not have difficulty swallowing them.

However, some people think that a future of 3D-printed food would be a disaster. It could take away many jobs, including those for growing, shipping and packaging food. Imagine a world

第13页(共23页)

where there was no need for farming or growing crops and the same tastes and structures could be printed from an uncooked “food ink”. Traditional cafes and restaurants might lose business, too. Also, there are worries about the healthy value of printed food: is it really possible to get what we need from food-based “inks” or something like that?

As we know, cooking and eating together with family and friends has long been a traditional

and enjoyable activity. It is hard to imagine a world where the pastime of cooking is dead and meals can be created at the touch of a button.

38. The second paragraph mainly tells us . ( B ) A. show us how 3D food printing works B. tell us why we should use 3D food printing C. help us to know what we can use to print food D. let us understand when to use 3D food printing

40. How many disadvantages of 3D food printing are mentioned from the last two paragraphs? ( B )

A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D.Five. 41. What is the writer’s opinion about 3D food printing? ( C ) A. 3D-printed food is tasty and necessary. B. It is difficult to understand 3D food printing. C. The word culture includes not only the customs of our society, its art, music, but also everyday activities. Cultures give us a sense of belonging in society. So the losing of one’s culture is, for many, alarming. Many people believe their traditional ways of life are under threat (威胁) and that something should be done. Yet for some, the losing of culture is a natural result of globalization(全球化) and progress. So is the globalization of culture a threat or a chance?

Those who see globalization as a threat argue that societies are losing special parts of their

cultures. For example, Omotik, a language spoken in East Africa, has only 50 live speakers. There are also increasing fears in China, where the losing of musical and dance traditions, as well as traditional crafts, is causing concern to many. Some argue that it is hard to find differences between London and Tokyo. Young people, whose ideas are often influenced by Western or other popular cultures, often refuse or even give up the traditions their parents grew up with.

Others focus on the advantages of globalization. They accept that Western culture is spreading, but they also point to how Western countries and many other parts of the world are being shown to world cultures. Young Americans enjoy Japanese comic magazines and watch Korean movies. Thai teenagers enjoy pop music from Hong Kong. Many argue that there are

第15页(共23页)

advantages to these cross-cultural exchanges and that they lead to better understandings between cultures. They say world traditions are celebrated more widely because of these. Chinese New Year, now celebrated in most big cities around the world, is just one of the many festivals that are accepted internationally.

Anyway, many grass-roots organizations and governments are making efforts(努力) to protect their cultures. One successful example is Wales. There was a time when social pressures were killing off the Welsh language, but after years of efforts, it is now an active part of Welsh life again. Around the world, similar efforts are going on.

42. Which of the following is an OPINION according to the passage? ( C )

A. Omotik is a language spoken in East Africa. B. Young Americans enjoy Japanese comic magazines. C. The globalization of cultures is a chance to traditional ones.

D. Chinese New Year is now celebrated in most big cities around the world. 43. The underlined word “concern” in Paragraph 2 probably means “________”. ( A )

The way we spend our time can be divided into three “bottles”. These are the necessary tasks bottle, the voluntary(自愿的)tasks bottle and the happiness bottle.

Every day, we spend time filling the necessary tasks bottle with useful things, like making money, doing housework, buying food and paying bills. We then fill another bottle with voluntary tasks. These are things that we do for others, but we may not enjoy them. This bottle gets filled with tasks like taking children to activities, cooking family meals, and doing laundry. Those bottles are very important. If we don’t fill them each day, our family won’t run properly.

However, we often forget to fill the third bottle ---- the happiness bottle that we fill with activities that make us happy. Is your happiness bottle sometimes empty at the end of the day? Between doing all the necessary and voluntary tasks, time flies by, and before we know it, it is time for bed. We all have days like that.

This is why each day we have to make an effort to fill our happiness bottle. I fill mine by going to the dancing class. And I always leave classes more happily than when I enter. This week, I had the pleasure of taking part in a guitar practice in my neighborhood. We show our musical talent and practice music for charity. It was a time of fun, friendship and music-making. At the end of the evening, my happiness bottle was filled to top.

Will your activities bring joy to your life? Or are the other two tasks eating up all your time? Try to find ways to achieve a balance between how you fill your three bottles. At the end of the day, hopefully we’ve done all we can to make sure that our happiness bottle is filled.
