英语阅读(一)自考题-27

(总分100, 做题时间90分钟) 第一部分 选择题 Ⅰ.SPEED READING

Ever since humans have inhabited the earth, they have made use of various forms of communication. Generally, this expression of

thoughts and feelings has been in the form of oral speech. When there is a language barrier, communication is accomplished through sign language in which motions stand for letters, words and ideas.

Tourists, the deaf, and the mute have had to resort to this form of expression. Many of these symbols are very colorful and exact and can be used internationally; spelling, however, cannot.

Body language transmits ideas or thoughts by certain actions, either intentionally or unintentionally. A wink can be a way of

flirting or indicating that the party is only joking. A nod signifies approval, while shaking the head indicates a negative reaction. Other forms of nonlinguistic language can be found in Braille (a system of raised clots read with the fingertips), signal flags, Morse code, and smoke signals. Road maps and picture signs also guide, warn and instruct people.

While verbalization is the **mon form of language, other systems and techniques also express human thoughts and feelings. SSS_SIMPLE_SIN 1. All of the following can be used internationally except ______. A. spelling • B. motions

discover join participate which cross communicate where shrug more

than challenge train strike means

When we think of communication, we normally think of using

words—talking face to face, writing messages and so on. But in fact, we 1 far more in other ways. Our eyes and facial expressions usually tell the truth even when our words do not. Then there are gestures, often unconscious: raising the

eyebrows, rubbing the nose, 2 the shoulders, tapping the fingers, nodding and shaking the head. There is also the even more subtle \"body language\" of posture. Are you sitting—or standing—with

arms or legs 3 ? Is that person standing with hands in pockets, held in front of the body or hidden behind? Even the way we dress and colours we **municate things to others.

So, do **municate? Not in words, although a parrot might be 4 to repeat words and phrases which it doesn't

understand. But, as we have learnt, there is more to communication than words.

Take dogs for example. They bare their teeth to warn, wag their tails to welcome and stand firm, with hair erect to challenge. These signals are surely canine equivalent of the human body language of facial expression, gesture and posture.

Colour can be an important 5 of communication for animals. Many birds and fish change colours, for example, to attract partners during the mating season. And mating itself is commonly preceded by a special dance in which both partners 6 . Here again, there are 7 similarities to youngsters who dress up to meet partners at discotheques, 8 the music is often too loud for **munication. Communication there takes place through appearance and movements.

The most elaborate dances in the animal kingdom are those which bees use to communicate. With body movements alone they can tell other bees the direction and distance of a newly 9 food source.

All these examples may suggest instinctive rather than

**munication. But human body language is largely instinctive, too. And, in many ways, body language says far 10 intelligent, **munication ever can. SSS_FILL1. 分值: 2 答案:communicate SSS_FILL 2. 分值: 2 答案:shrugging SSS_FILL3.

Ⅴ.TRANSLATION

Q. 1 Would you include touching in the vocabulary of **munication?

A. Yes. And it should be used very carefully. 2 Skin is our oldest sense organ, and when it is touched by someone it

carries a strong emotional impact. It is a very sexually loaded form of communication.

3 In a business or social setting, a casual touch can be almost electric, even in a professional

relationship. 4 When someone is touched, he or she immediately stops for an instant and wonders, \"What did that

mean?\" 5 In such settings, \"hands off\" is the best policy because even a well-intentioned touch can be badly misconstrued. SSS_TEXT_QUSTI1. 分值: 6 答案:

当有人受到了触摸,他或她会立刻停下来一会儿,心中暗问:“这是什么意思?” SSS_TEXT_QUSTI 5. 分值: 6 答案:

在这类情况下,最好的对策是“免动尊手”,因为即使好意的触摸也会被歪曲误解。
