Motherhood may make women smarter and may help prevent dementia(痴呆) in old age by bathing the brain in protective hormones(荷尔蒙) , U.S. reseachers reported on Thursday.

Tests on rats show that those who raise two or more litters of pups do considerably better in tests of memory and skills than rats who have no babies, and their brains show changes that suggest they may be protected against diseases such as Alzheimer’s(老年痴呆症). University of Richmond psychology professor Craig Kinsley believes his findings will translate into humans.

“Our research shows that the hormones of pregnancy(怀孕) are protecting the brain, including estrogen(雌激素), which we know has many neuroprotective (保护神经的) effects,” Kinsley said.

“It’s rat data but humans are mammals just like these animals are mammals,” he added in a telephone interview. “They go through pregnancy and hormonal changes.”

Kinsley said he hoped public health officials and researchers will look to see if having had children protects a woman from Alzheimer’s and other forms of age-related brain decline.

“When people think about pregnancy, they think about what happens to babies and the mother from the neck down,” said Kinsley, who presented his findings to the annual meeting of the Society of Neuroscience in Orlando, Florida.

“They do not realize that hormones are washing on the brain. If you look at female animals who have never gone through pregnancy, they act differently toward young. But if she goes through pregnancy, she will sacrifice her life for her infant—that is a great change in her behavior that showed in genetic alterations(改变) to the brain.”

56. What does the phrase “litters of pups” mean in the second paragraph? A. Baby rats. B. Animals. C. Old rats. D. Grown-up rats. 57. What can protect the brain of a woman according to the passage? A. Estrogen. B. The hormones of pregnancy. C. More exercise. D. Taking care of children.

58. “It’s rat data but humans are mammals just like these animals are mammals.” What does the

sentence suggest?

A. The experiments on the rats have nothing to do with humans. B. The experiments on the rats are very important for animals. C. The experiments on the rats are much the same on humans.

D. The experiments on the rats are much the same on other animals. 59. Which title is the best for this passage?

A. Do You Want to Be Smarter? B. Motherhood Makes Women Smarter C. Mysterious Hormones D. An Important Study

Do you know how to use a mobile phone (手机) without being rude to the people around you?

Talking during a performance irritates (激怒) people. If you are expecting an emergency call, sit near the exit doors and set your phone to vibrate (振动). When your mobile phone vibrates, you can leave quietly and let the others enjoy the performance.

Think twice before using mobile phones in elevators, museums, churches or other indoor public places—especially enclosed spaces. Would you want to listen to someone’s conversation in these places? Worse yet, how would you feel if a mobile phone rang suddenly during a funeral! It happens more often than you think. Avoid these embarrassing situations by making sure your mobile phone is switched off.

When eating at a restaurant with friends, don’t place your mobile phone on the table. This conveys the message that your phone calls are more important than those around you.

Mobile phones have sensitive microphones that allow you to speak at the volume you would on a regular phone. This enables you to speak quietly so that others won’t hear the details of your conversations. If you are calling from a noisy area, use your hand to direct your voice into the microphone.

Many people believe that they can’t live without their mobile phone. Owning a mobile phone definitely makes life more convenient, but limit your conversations to urgent ones and save the personal calls until you are at home.

60. What should you do when you need to answer a phone call during a performance? A. Call back after the performance. B. Answer it near the exit door. C. Talk outside the exit door. D. Speak in a low voice.

61. Putting your mobile phone on a restaurant table may make your friends think_____. A. you prefer to talk to your friends at the table B. you value your calls more than your friends C. you are enjoying the company of your friends D.you are polite and considerate of your friends

62. When you are calling in a noisy area, you are advised to _____.

A. use a more sensitive microphone B. shout loudly into your microphone

C. go away quietly to continue the phone call D. use your hand to help speak into the phone 63. The author implies that the use of mobile phones in such places as museums should be_____. A. limited B. expected C. discouraged D. recommended 64. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A. You should limit your mobile phone calls to personal affairs. B. You should speak quietly into your phone while in a church. C. You are supposed to turn off your mobile phone at a funeral.

D. You are supposed to use your mobile phone as much as possible.

When a rare disease ALD threatened to kill the four-year-old boy Lorenzo, his parents refused to give up hope. Doctors explained that there was no cure for ALD, and that he would

probably die within three years. But Lorenzo’s parents set out to prove the doctors wrong.

The parents devoted themselves to keeping their son alive and searching for a cure. But doctors and the families of other ALD patients often refused to take them seriously. They thought the efforts to find a cure were a waste of time, and drug companies weren’t interested in supporting research into such a rare disease.

However, the parents still refused to give up and spent every available hour in medical libraries and talking to anyone who would help. Through trial and error, they finally created a cure from ingredients (调料) commonly found in the kitchen. The cure, named \"Lorenzo’s Oilhe boy’s life. Despite the good results, scientists and doctors remained unconvinced. They said there was no real evidence that the oil worked and that the treatment was just a theory. As a result, some families with ALD children were reluctant to try it.

Finally, the boy’s father organized an international study to test the oil. After ten years of trials, the answer is: the oil keeps ALD children healthy.

65. Doctors said that Lorenzo might die within three years because_____ .

A. they had never treated the disease before B. Lorenzo was too young to be cured C. no cure had been found for ALD D. ALD was a rare disease 66. The families of other ALD patients thought that _____ .

Every day 25 million U.S. children ride school buses. The safety record for these buses is much better than for passenger cars; but nevertheless, about 10 children are killed each year riding on large school buses, and nearly four times that number are killed outside buses in the loading zones. By and large, however, the nation’s school children are transported to and from school safety.

Even though the number of school bus accidents is not large, the safety of children is always of intense public concern. While everyone wants to see children transported safely, people are divided about what needs to be done--particularly whether seat belts should be compulsory.

People in favour of seat belts on school buses--many of them parents and medical organizations--argue that seat belts are necessary not only to reduce fatality and injury, but also to teach children lessons about the importance of using them routinely in any moving vehicle. A side benefit, they point out, is that seat belts help keep children in their seats, away from the bus driver. People who object to seat belt installation suggest that children are already well protected by the school buses that follow the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) safety requirements set in 1977. They also believe that many children won’t wear seat belts anyway, and that may damage the belts or use them as weapons to hurt other children.

A new Research council report on school bus safety suggest that there are alternate safety devices and procedures that may be more effective and less expensive. For example, the study committee suggested that raising seat backs four inches may have the same safety effectiveness as

seat belts.

The report sponsored by the Department of transportation at the request of Congress, reviews seat belts extensively while taking a broader look at safety in and around school buses. 69. Each year, children killed outside buses in the loading zones, are about_____. A. 10 B. 40 C. 30 D. 50

70. According to the passage, who has the greatest degree of control of the school buses “safety”? A. A new Research Council. B. The Department of Transportation.

C. The Medical Organization. D. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. 71. It may be inferred from this passage that_____ .

A. many of the opponents(反对者) of seat belt installation are parents and officials of the Department of Transportation

B. proposals of seat belts on school buses would be seriously considered

C. an alternate safety device (raising seat backs four inches) may be taken into consideration D. The Department of Transportation may either take the idea of seat belts or other measures when it reviews the whole situation

72. The title below which best expresses the idea of the passage is“_____”.

A. Making School Buses Even Safer for Children B. Seat Belts Needed on School Buses C. Alternate Safety Devices and Procedures D. Safety in and around School Buses

Schooling and Education

It is commonly believed in the United States that school is where people go to get an education. Nevertheless, it has been said that today children interrupt their education to go to school. The distinction between schooling and education implied by this remark is important.

Education is much more open-ended and all-inclusive than schooling. Education knows no bounds. It can take place anywhere, whether in the shower or in the job, whether in a kitchen or on a tractor. It includes both the formal learning that takes place in schools and the whole universe of informal learning. The agents of education can range from a revered grandparent to the people debating politics on the radio, from a child to a distinguished scientist.

Whereas schooling has a certain predictability, education quite often produces surprises. A chance conversation with a stranger may lead a person to discover how little is known of other religions. People are engaged in education from infancy on. Education, then, is a very broad, inclusive term. It is a lifelong process, a process that starts long before the start of school, and one that should be an integral(不可缺的)part of one's entire life.

Schooling, on the other hand, is a specific, formalized process, whose general pattern varies little from one setting to the next. Throughout a country, children arrive at school at approximately the same time, take assigned seats, are taught by an adult, use similar textbooks, do homework, take exams, and so on. The slices of reality that are to be learned, whether they are the alphabet or an understanding of the workings of government, have usually been limited by the boundaries of the subject being taught. For example, high school students know that they are not likely to find out in their classes the truth about political problems in their communities or what the newest filmmakers are experimenting with. There are definite conditions surrounding the formalized process of schooling.

Hair is one of the commonest parts of the body and something that is given a lot of attention. You’ve had it since birth and you take care of it every day. But how much do you know about your hair?

The average head of hair is made up of 120,000 strands(根), each of which has a life expectancy of about three years. While some hairs are growing, others are resting, and others are falling out.

A hair is made up of two parts: the shaft(发丝)and the root. The shaft is a visible part. It has a complex structure. The root is the living part of the hair. It is here where cells develop and form the shaft. It also has a very complex structure.

Every day, a normal head of about 120,000 hairs will lose between 50 and 100 hairs --- or 30,000 hairs per year! Hair dies, falls out, and grows again. The life cycle is made up of 3 stages: First, a long, and active growth period that lasts about 3 years: the hair grows. Second, a very short transition(过渡)period that lasts about 3 weeks, during which time the hair is inactive: the hair follicle(毛囊)shrinks. Third, a resting period of about 3 months: at the end of this period the hair is pushed out and lost. This cycle runs constantly throughout life.

A hair grows from 1 to 1.5 cm each month and its usual life expectancy is about three years. So very long hair is rarely seen. However, there are some people who do grow long hair.

The most common form of hair loss does not come from disease. In fact, we can almost say it is a secondary sexual characteristic. It is called androgenetic alopecia (also known as pattern baldness) and results from a combination of genetic and hormonal factors.

There are two sorts of melanin(黑色素)present in all types of hair, in different proportions. These make it possible to obtain all the different shades of colour---blonde, brown or red.

57.B 细节题。根据文章第 3 段中的 …the hormones of pregnancy(怀孕) are protecting the brain可得出答案。

Motherhood may make women smarter

When your mobile phone vibrates, you can leave quietly and let the others enjoy the performance.

This conveys the message that your phone calls are more important than those around you这与B的意思一致。

If you are calling from a noisy area, use your hand to direct your voice into the microphone.(如果在嘈杂环境中接听电话,要用你的手掩住话 筒外侧,这样会使你的声音更集中) 这与D的意思一致。 Think twice before using mobile phones in elevators,

museums, churches or other indoor public places—especially enclosed spaces.

Worse yet,how would you feel if a mobile phone rang

suddenly during a funeral!接下来在末句说:要想避免类似的尴尬局面,就要making sure your mobile phone is switched off.,这里的switched off 与C中的 turn off 同义。 Doctors explained that there was no cure for ALD, and

that he would probably die within three years.

nearly four times that number are killed outside buses in the loading zones”得知。

Can Computers Replace Teachers in English Teaching?

Nowadays computer-aided instruction is becoming more and more popular in high school, especially in teaching English. With the help of multimedia, they claim that they have more freedom of learning whatever they like, which can arouse their interest.

However some people believe that teachers can better help students learn knowledge and acquire skills. They argue that, for one thing, students cannot talk to machines. For another, computers cannot supervise students, thus some students spend the precious time not on English, but on net chatting.

As far as I am concerned, computers cannot replace teachers in English teaching because students need to contact human beings. At the same time, they should try their best to gain more knowledge. By combining the two methods, students can learn English better.
