Nowadas all kinds of reference books flood among students. Reference books themselves are useful and helpful. However, the improper use of reference books, such as depending too much on them, will certainly do harm to students.
Obviously, depending too much on reference books has many side effects. To begin with, they can make some students less attentive in class. Armed with keys to all the questions, they seem to know all and only find their memory completely blank in exam-rooms. Besides, some reference books are published in such haste that they occasionaly provide students with wrong information, thus making students confused about some knowledge. Worst of all, by merely copying from reference books, students gradually become lazy and get into passive learning habits which are difficult to get rid of, and even do great harm to their creativity.
Therefore, I suggest that sudents should take a correct attitude toward reference books. In addition, they should be taught how to make proper use of the books and never overuse them by merely copying without thinking. Only in this way can they reduce the negative effects of reference books.
2. Some people argue that athletes, while playing games, should adhere to the principle “Friendship first, competition second”, but others are against this view. They think that “playing a game is fun only when you win.” What is your opinion?
Write a composition of about 200 words on the following topic: Playing a Game Is Fun only When You Win?
Playing a Game Is Fun Only When You Win?
Some people argue that athletes, while playing games, should adhere to the principle “Friendship first, competition second”, and that is the true sportsmanship. Should we give up competing for the sake of friendship?
Personally, I disagree with this point of view. There is no denying that competitors should be friendly with each other. However, the primary goal of every player, after hard training for a year or two, is to win the game. His/Her sole motivation, either during the training or in the race, is prompted by a looming hope and a prospective championship. Be it a chess game or a competition of weigh-lifting or a race of a hundred-meter dash, the case is always true. If he/she wins the game, high rewards, flowers and honor will pile upon him/her. If he/she loses once or twice, he/she will become less courageous for the third time. In addition to that, several losses may beat him/her down, and his/her next battle, if he/she is daring to fight, will probably be a fiasco.
So, in my opinion, the fun or happiness of playing a game lies in the athlete’s ultimate achievement of the goal. We all know Napoleon’s famous saying that he who doesn’t want to be a general isn’t a good soldier. I agree that an unambitious athlete is not a real athlete.

Which Do You Prefer: Joining Package Tours or Traveling on Your Own?
I went to Hangzhou by joining a package tour at the end of the last summer vacation. I left that it was much more convenient and comfortable than traveling on my own as I did before.
First of all, participating in the package tour, I don’t have to worry about the arrangement for board and lodging. The travel agency has settled everything ahead of time. It is great to have a good meal and a sweet sleep after a whole day’s tour. Secondly, I can know more about the place I have visited. The guide can give me more specific introduction and more vivid description about the history, scenery, and local customs. What’s more, the guide arranges funny activities and gives the tourists enough time to do what they like, such as playing games, buying souvenirs and taking pictures. The guide takes great efforts to make the tourists enjoy themselves. If tourists are not satisfied with the package tour’s service, as a tourist, he can complain it and claim his rights. Compared with traveling on one’s own, though a little more expensive, joining a package tour provides tourists with safety and satisfaction.
On the whole, I prefer to join a package tour, which is more convenient, comfortable and enjoyable.
4. Mobile phone nowadays creates a new way of life, but meanwhile it brings about embarrassing situations and mobile phone etiquette becomes a real problem. Analyze the reasons and some suggestions are required to be provided.
Write a note of about 50-60words based on the following situation: Mobile Phone Etiquette
Mobile Phone Etiquette
The mobile phone has created a new way of life. It gives us the opportunity to reach people whenever and wherever we like. But when mobile phones become as commonplace as wristwatches, it seems they are also creating embarrassing situations.
Sometimes such occasions come without notice. We let our phones ring in restaurants, theatres, classrooms, or business meetings. People discuss their personal issues loudly over their phones while strangers are around. People spend all their time in the presence of friends paying more attention to those at the other end of their mobile phones. Now mobile phone etiquette is a big problem.
Here are some tips for being a good mobile phone user. Firstly, remember to check your phone is off at activities. Secondly, respect the people around you when making calls in public. Thirdly, don’t answer your phone while talking with another person unless that phone call is more important than the person you are with. Bearing these rules in our minds, we will be a responsible and considerate user. The disharmonious voice will vanish with the rising of the awareness that every one of us shall not be so careless and indifferent to things around us. Live, and let live. Only in this way will a harmonious society full of love and light never be a dream!
5. We are always taught to be honest since childhood. However, some believe honesty is not always the best policy and it is practically unwise to be honest all the time. Write a composition on the following topic:
Is Telling the Truth Always Better Than Telling Lies?
Is Telling the Truth Always Better Than Telling Lies?
We are all taught to be honest since childhood. We were made aware that lying was morally wrong and that good people always told the truth. Of course, as a general rule, we should be honest and sincere with others in order to gain the trust from them.
However, it is practically unwise to be honest all the time. In some special situations, we had better not tell the truth. Telling lies is often a way of appropriate communication with others. For example, when we meet someone for the first time, we say, “Nice to meet you!” Perhaps actually we are not pleased to meet them. But this kind of expression is indispensable to creating a friendly atmosphere. If we really speak out the true feeling to any -one we dislike. I’m afraid that we would not have friends any more. So long as we don’t hurt others, telling lies is an acceptable practice. That is why “while lie”, telling a lie for good intension, exists in language. On the other hand, when we are dealing with dishonest people, to be dishonest with them does not hurt our credibility. In other words, telling the truth is not always better than telling lies.
To sum up all the reason mentioned above, it is not always reasonable to tell the truth. We should be flexible to the circumstances we live.
6. Nowadays the Internet has become part of people’s life, and millions of young people have made friends online. Write a composition on the following topic: Is It Wise to make Friends Online?
Is It Wise to Make Friends Online?
Making friends online has increasingly grown in popularity in the last few years and now and then we hear some appalling stories of disasters as a result of it. As far as I am concerned, it is not wise to make friends online as there are potential dangers to it.
Some people’s dependence on online relationships can build up the risk of having potential psychological problems. People can be easily attracted to online life and those who are lonely, depressed or not satisfied with their real life can easily develop an addiction to the “perfect” online life, as they can make up life stories. Too much addiction can gradually affect one’s life in the real world. Gradually the addicts become isolated from others and unconcerned with people or events around them. In addition, cyber relationships have the magical power of destroying intimate relationships between family members and friendships that exist in real life. Teenagers of the generation of Instant Messaging are also too keen on their online friends to care about their relationships with their parents.
In conclusion, though people are finding it entertaining to make friends online, it does harm in several ways. Too much trust and dependence on cyber life can cause net addiction that may lead to several psychological disorders or physical problems. Moreover, relationships in real life have been affected by on-line relationships. Extreme cases indicate the most dreadful consequences caused by cyber criminals. As making friends online is spreading its attractions, people need to be aware of these dangers and take proper actions to protect themselves from being hurt.
7. December 5 is International Volunteers Day. Since 1985, when the United Nations announced the special day, tens of millions of people around the world have volunteered to help those in need. China now has 4.5 million registered volunteers who have provided more than 4.5 billion hours of volunteer work. What can you gain from volunteering? Write a composition on the following topic: The Benefit of Volunteering
The Benefit of Volunteering
As we all know, volunteering has a meaningful and positive impact on the community you serve and the people you help. In the meanwhile, it can have benefits for you, too. In my opinion, there are two reasons to volunteer: feel good about yourself while helping others: build your portfolio.
On one hand, volunteering makes you feel good about yourself on a purely selfish level. There are few things more satisfying than helping people. Hammering nails on a new home while the owner beams with pride right next to you is an amazing feeling. Walking or running to raise funds for a cause close to your heart helps to give you a sense of purpose and helps you realize just how lucky you are. As a volunteer, you will gain new perspective, for it’s so easy for us all to get a little too wrapped up in our own lives. On the other hand, from a professional standpoint, volunteering is a great way to add to your portfolio. From press release to design pieces, from public speaking to fundraising, you will have the opportunity to build your portfolio. This is especially beneficial for students or young professionals, although all of us should continually work on building our portfolios.
Apart from the benefits of building up your confidence and making your portfolio better, there are probably many other benefits you will find in your volunteer work. So it is time for you to participate in more work to help others as well as help yourselves.
8. Tourism is a booming business in China. However, some people worry that too many tourists may bring harm to the environment, while others don’t think so. What is your opinion? Write a composition on the following topic: Will Tourism Bring Harm to the Environment?
Will Tourism Bring Harm to the Environment?
Tourism is a booming industry in China. With many travelers flocking to different destinations around China, tourism is becoming one of the most viable business markets. However, air travel, car travel and other aspects of tourism are adding to China’s pollution crisis and this is becoming a big problem. As far as I am concerned, tourism will bring harm to the environment.
For one thing, thousands of people visiting an area can cause more pollution. With so many visitors crowding into there, there is an increasing demand for different means of transportation including cars, buses, etc, which will emit more waste gases. Since exhaust released by automobiles is one of the main reasons causing air pollution, the booming tourism will surely result in more pollution. For another, many people who visit an area are sometimes careless in their actions. They leave food, paper, and bottles behind. They harm plants, animals or objects important to a local culture because those on holiday often do not understand the damage they can cause.
th
Polluted environment is really a pressing problem nowadays. Tourism is one of the main reasons that cause pollution. Therefore, some actions need to be taken to curb the development of tourism. For example, environmental levies should be placed on services and goods that visitors buy such as hotel rooms. Voluntary schemes should be encouraged. Driving should be discouraged through parking charges.
