Children around the world have many interesting hobbies. Collecting stamps and collecting coins are hobbies that are popular in most countries. Collecting baseball cards would be a favorite in just a few nations. There are more hobbies than anyone could count, and more are thought up each year.

One favorite hobby is rock collecting. Some children enjoy cracking(弄碎) rocks with a hammer. The inside of a rock can look very different from the outside. Other children enjoy mounting and labeling(标标签) the rocks that they have found. Sometimes these children grow up to be geologists, scientists who study the earth. Some children love the water. There are many hobbies for children who enjoy water activities.

Swimming, diving, waterskiing, and boating are a few of the choices. Building sand castles and collecting seashells can be fun, too. Children who live close to the water often have a “water hobby”.

There is an English saying: “Laughter is the best medicine.” Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now, however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body. They have found that laughter really can improve people’s health.

Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their heart, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, the heart beating and breathing; it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial.

Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programmes. The group that tolerated(忍耐) the pain for the longest time was the groups which listened to a funny programme. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemicals in the brain which diminish both stress and pain.

As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics, in which they help to improve their patients’ condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not

really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter. 46. Doctors have proved the following except that _____.

Men wear bright flowered shirts, and women often wear long flowered dresses. There are traditional Chinese, Japanese and Filipino holidays and all the holidays from the United States. They call Hawaii the Aloha State. Aloha means both hello and good-bye. It also means I love you.

Usually when people from different countries, races and traditions live together, there are serious problems. There are a few problems in Hawaii, but, in general, people have learned to live together in peace.

Hawaiians get most of their money from visitors, and most of the visitors come from the mainland and from Japan. There are so many people living in Hawaii now that there are residential(居住的) areas where there used to be farms.

Some of the big sugar and apple companies have moved to the Philippines, where they do not have to pay workers as much money. D

Most young people enjoy some forms of physical activities. It may be walking, cycling or swimming, or in winter, skating or skiing. It may be a game of some kind, football, hockey (曲棍球), golf, or tennis, it may be mountaineering.

Those who have a passion(热情,激情) for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks on high mountains? This astonishment is caused probably by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their leisure.

Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no man-made rules, as there are for such games as golf and football. There are, of course, rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods.

If we compare mountaineering with other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that

mountaineering is not a “game”. We would be mistaken in this assumption. There are, it is true, no “matches” between “teams” of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork.

The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical capacities.

A mountain climber continues to improve in skill year after year. A skier is probably past his prime by the age of thirty, and most international tennis champions are in their early twenties. But it is not unusual for a man of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more time than younger men, but they probably climb with more skill and less wasted effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment. 56. Mountaineering is a sport which involves _____.

A. hardship B. cold C. physical risk D. all the above

57. The main difference between a sport and a game lies in the origin of the _____. A. uniform B. activity C. rules D. skills 58. Mountaineering is also a team sport because _____.

A. it involves rules B. it involves matches between teams

C. it requires mental and physical qualities D. mountaineers depend on each other while climbing 59. Which of the following is TRUE?

A. Mountaineers compete against each other. B. Mountaineers compete against other teams.

C. Mountaineers compete against nature. D. Mountaineers compete against international standard 60. What is the best title for the text?

A. Mountaineering B. Mountain Climbers C. Mountaineering is Different from Golf and Football D. Mountaineering is more Dangerous than Other Sports 四、短文改错(共10分,每题1分)

A Photo Show

HAIDIAN MIDDLE SCHOOL, BEIJING: Later in April, a photo show was held in our school. It was a great success! All the photos were taken by the students themselves. There were both black-and-white and color photos, presenting our school life, the beauty of nature, festival activities and so on. All the works of arts were on show in the reading room on the second floor. Every day, a large number of students went to enjoy it and they were surprised to find that the pictures were so wonderful. Those whose photos were chosen the best were given unexpected prizes. In short, this photo show really made our life colorful.
