Dear Jessica,
How are you? I miss you so much! I can't wait until summer vacation when we can play together again. School has been really busy but also a lot of fun. Let me tell you about what I've been learning in my Chinese and English classes.
In Chinese class, we've been reading some really cool stories and poems. My favorite was a story called \"The Magical Paintbrush\" about a young boy who gets a paintbrush that can make anything he paints become real! He uses it to help his poor family but then things get a little crazy. It was such an
imaginative tale. We also read some ancient poems by famous Chinese poets like Li Bai. His poems about nature were just beautiful, describing misty mountains and sweeping rivers. Speaking of nature, we went on a fun field trip to a park and had to write descriptions using lots of descriptive words we've been learning. I wrote about the bright green leaves swaying in the breeze and the cheerful birds singing in the trees.
For our writing practice, we've been working on different styles of compositions. We wrote narrative stories telling about our most exciting day ever. I wrote about the time my family took a trip to the beach and I got knocked over by a huge wave! We also had to write persuasive essays convincing our teacher why we should get less homework or be able to have class outside sometimes. I argued that outdoor classes would help us concentrate better and appreciate nature more. We're just starting opinion pieces now where we have to state our view and give reasons to back it up. I think I'll write about why summer is the best season.
In vocabulary, we played a lot of fun games to learn new words. My favorite is a guessing game where you have to describe a new word until someone guesses it right. We've focused on some really great words like \"courageous\and \"whimsical\". The teacher even used actions to help us learn words like \"dashing\" (she ran quickly around the room) and \"rumbling\" (she stomped on the floor). It's such an entertaining way to expand our language skills.
We've also been doing plays in class, which is amazing practice for pronunciation and speaking skills. Last month, we performed the classic folktale \"The Gourd Brothers\
gourds come alive as mischievous brothers. I was the littlest gourd brother who was also the cleverest and helped outwit the evil monk. It was hilarious when I had to stuff myself inside the monk's robe! I was nervous for my lines at first, but it ended up being a blast.
My English lessons have been very interesting too! In reading, we've explored different genres like fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and drama. One of the novels we read was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which was my favorite. Can you imagine what it would be like to tour a crazy chocolate factory?? We made predictions about what outrageous thing would happen next. For non-fiction, we learned all about winter sports like skiing and snowboarding by reading sports magazines. Poems were tougher since they use more figurative language, but we had fun analyzing vivid metaphors and imagery in famous works. Writing has been really fun. We wrote personal narratives about our most embarrassing moment. (Don't worry, I didn't reveal that time I slipped and fell into the punch bowl at your 8th birthday party!) We've covered lots of skills like using descriptive details, varying our sentence structures, and incorporating dialogue. My dialogue always cracks the teacher up because my characters tend to be a little too dramatic. Like, \"Hurry, we
haven't a moment to lose!\" I say stuff like that all the time though, so it's pretty natural for me!
We do journal entries too, which is nice because we can write about whatever we want. I usually write about my favorite books, movies, or video games. Journaling helps get my creative juices flowing for the other writing assignments. Just this week, we had to write persuasive letters to our principal about a new school rule we want. I tried to convince her that we need to bring our pets to class sometimes because it would help reduce stress and make us happier students. You know how much I love my gecko, Gurgle!
In English vocabulary, we play cool games like Salt & Pepper and Make a Rhyme to learn new words like \"courteous\
\"grueling\can use fancy new words correctly in your writing. My goal is to keep expanding my vocabulary so I can become an eloquent speaker and author! We also have contests to see who can make the silliest sentence by using lots of long, complicated vocabulary words together.
As you can see, I've been keeping myself super busy in both my Chinese and English classes. We've covered so many engaging stories, writing styles, and speaking activities. My
teachers have definitely made it all really fun and interactive. I'm working hard to improve my skills every day. Maybe you'll get to read one of my bestselling adventure novels one day! I'll be sure to make you the wacky sidekick character.
Well, I should probably get back to my homework now. In Chinese, I have to write a myth to explain the origins of the sun and moon. In English, I'm drafting a poem about the four seasons using personification and metaphor. Yikes, no rest for the aspiring author! Miss you and can't wait until summer! Your friend, [Your Name]

Dear Jessica,
How are you doing? I miss you so much! It's been forever since we saw each other in person. I can't wait until summer vacation so we can hang out and have sleepovers again. Until then, I'll have to settle for writing you this super long letter for my Chinese and English homework assignment.
Did I mention how much I'm dreading going back to school after spring break? Fourth grade is no joke! The work is really
piling up, especially in language arts. In Chinese class, we're reading the most boring novel about some old guy named Yu Guan Yin. Apparently he was this legendary figure who helped the poor and sick people, but I can't get into it at all. I'll never understand why they make us read such lame stories.
At least in English class the assignments are slightly more interesting. This week we have to write a 600 word letter to a friend describing our recent experiences. I've decided to make you that friend since you're my bestie. Get ready for me to unload all my thoughts and feelings!
Let me start by venting about my annoying little brother Jake. He's 8 years old and loves doing anything possible to bug me. Just yesterday, he snuck into my room and messed up my beautifully organized bookshelves. He thinks it's sooooo hilarious when I get angry, but it's really not funny at all. We ended up getting into a huge fight and both got grounded from TV and video games for a week. So unfair!
When I'm not battling my brother, I've been keeping busy with swim team practice. The big city championship meet is coming up next month, so we've had double practices every day after school. I'm exhausted, but determined to win my events since the scouts from the top clubs will be there. If I can get
recruited to a elite squad, it will look amazing on my college applications down the road.
Of course, that's still about 8 years away from happening! Sometimes I can't even imagine being in college. Fourth grade is hard enough as it is. We just started learning long division in math, and I'm completely lost. Why do they have to make things so complicated? I spent 3 hours on my homework last night and still didn't understand any of it. Maybe you can tutor me over FaceTime this weekend?
Well, I could ramble on forever about my stresses and frustrations with being a 10-year-old. But I'd love to hear how you're doing as well. Are you enjoying your new school in Minnesota? What's the weather like there? Have you made any new friends? Tell me all the juicy details! Missing you like crazy, [Your Name]
P.S. This ended up being 612 words, so mission
accomplished on that 600 word assignment! Told you I could get carried away. Can't wait for your reply, bestie!

Dear Teacher,
For our Chinese Language Arts assignment, we had to write a 600 word letter in English to a friend. I decided to write to my friend Anna who lives in the United States. Here is my letter: Dear Anna,
Hi! How are you doing? I'm writing you this letter to tell you all about my life here in China. I just started 4th grade and I'm really enjoying my new classes and teachers this year.
My favorite subject is math because I'm good at solving problems and doing calculations. This year we are learning multi-digit multiplication and long division, which seemed hard at first but now I'm getting the hang of it. My math teacher Mr. Wang is really funny and makes the lessons entertaining by telling jokes and doing magic tricks.
Another subject I like is science. We got to do an experiment last week where we made little rockets out of film canisters and launched them across the classroom by adding baking soda and vinegar. It was so cool to see them soar through the air! In science, we are learning about the different states of matter - solid, liquid and gas. It's really interesting to understand why substances exist in different forms.
Physical education is probably my least favorite subject. I'm just not very athletic or coordinated. We have to run laps around the playground for warm-up and I'm always one of the last ones finished. Then we play games like basketball and soccer which I'm not very good at. I much prefer reading, writing, and academic subjects to sports.
One fun school event we have coming up is our annual Science Fair. Each student has to come up with an idea for an experiment or project related to science, then put together a display board with our hypothesis, materials, procedures, data, and conclusions. I'm thinking of doing a project testing which type of bridge design can hold the most weight. I'll have to build different bridge models out of popsicle sticks and then load them up with weights until they collapse. It should be a fun challenge! The science fair will be held in December and parents can come view all of the projects. There are prizes for the top three projects in each grade.
In my free time after school, I like to read fantasy novels, practice my drawing skills, and hang out with my best friends Lily and Mei. We'll often have sleepovers on the weekend and stay up late watching movies, painting our nails, and talking about things happening at school. Lily and I have been best friends
since we were babies - our moms are best friends too. Mei is newer to our friend group but she is really nice and fun to have around.
My family isok doing too. My little brother Xiaoming who is 6 years old just started 1st grade. He is struggling a bit with learning to read but my parents are working with him every night. My dad has a busy job as an accountant but he tries to make time on the weekends to take us to the park or playground. My mom works part-time at a bakery so she is able to pick us up from school most days. For our birthdays and special occasions, she'll often make our favorite cakes and pastries which is such a treat!
I miss you and hope you are doing well in America! Let me know if you'd like to be penpals and keep writing letters back and forth. I'd love to hear all about your life and experiences over there. I'll do my best to respond in English practice my writing skills.
Your friend, [My Name]
That's the 600 word letter I wrote to my friend Anna for the assignment. I tried to include lots of relevant details about my
daily life, school experiences, family, and interests. Writing the letter in English was challenging at times, but good practice. Let me know if you need any clarification or have additional instructions! Sincerely, [My Name]
