Task 1

Who do you think is responsible for the screwed-up meeting? Why? (open question,) Food for thought: Is it Cricket that screws up Mulan’s meeting with the matchmaker?

It seems that Cricket causes all the problem, but even without Cricket, it’s impossible for Mulan to present herself as a suitable bride. She is different, and no matter how she tries, she cannot pretend to be someone she is not. And the matchmaker has a bad impression on her the first time she lays her eyes on her. She’s definitely not the kind of bride she’s expecting.

Task 3 Two samples of creative first person story retelling:

Mulan: What can I do? I’ve already tried my best. I don’t think a girl can only bring her family honor by striking a good match, but everyone else believes that. They say it is my destiny to bear sons. I don’t want to uproot our family tree, so I let them do whatever they like to turn me into an instant bride. But I guess I just can’t hide who I am, no matter how hard I try.The matchmaker dislikes me the first time she lays eyes on me. She says I am skinny, not good for bearing sons. Haven’t they just mentioned that men want girls with tiny waste? Then, she asks me to recite something. It’s simple, but I don’t know why I always can’t remember. So, I have to refer to my notes. She senses something and tries to take away my fan. Luckily, nothing there. But she takes my hand and touches the ink. The ink goes from her hand to her face. God, she is drawing herself a funny face! I am shocked and don’t pour the tea properly. Then, I see Cricket having a bath in the cup. She wants to drink it and asks me to be silent, but I have to do something. I try to take the cup back, but she wouldn’t let me. Just then, Cricket jumps into her clothes. She goes nuts and accidentally catches fire. I try to put out the fire with whatever I have, but it gets worse and she screams out for help. Again, the only water I can find is the tea in the teapot, so I throw the water over her. Luckily, the fire is out. But the matchmaker is furious and calls me a disgrace before a big crowd. I’ve tried my best, but guess I will never pass for a perfect bride or a perfect daughter.

Cricket: Did I do anything wrong? Grandma wants me to bring luck to Mulan and help her strike a good match, but what can I do? I’m just an ordinary cricket! And I certainly don’t like to be put in a cage! So I jumped out to have some fun. But Mulan finds out. Can you imagine… She puts me into her mouth! The matchmaker doesn’t see me, but I get so sticky and uncomfortable. So when Mulan spits me out, I have to clean up. Then, I see a cup of tea…fresh, warm, a good bath. But unfortunately, Mulan sees me again. The matchmaker is about to drink my bath water, but I don’t know why Mulan tries to take the cup back. That fat woman needs to be punished. She says Mulan is skinny and clumsy, and asks her to recite and do silly things. You know, I am going to do some tricks. For example, jump into her clothes. Yes, I did, and the disgusting woman goes crazy and jumps around. Then, she catches fire. To make it even better, Mulan fans it up! The fat woman screams and runs out of the house. She asks for help, but no one does anything. Eventually, Mulan puts out the fire by throwing the water on her. She saves her life, but instead of being grateful, she curses her, and says she would never find a husband! What a woman! Who would marry her? Mulan is 100 times better.
