Listening Comprehension

Section A

11. W: Look what a mess you’ve made! I’ve told you several times, but you just turn a deaf ear to

me. Can you listen to my words for once?

M: Shut up! You’re driving me mad with your constant complaining. Q: What does the woman complain about the man?

He never takes...seriously,He is always impatient等可知,对话可能与对男士的抱怨有关。

【解 析】选[C]。对话中女士提到you just turn a deaf ear to me,[C]是对女士的话的同义转述,故答案为[C]。turn a deaf ear to sb. [A]和[B]是针对a deaf ear和drive… mad设的干扰项。

12. W: Bill, will you tell me Mary’s phone number?

M: Well, it’s just at the tip of my tongue, but I have to look it up in my notebook. Q: What does the man mean?

He can’t,He doesn’t know可知,男士的话为听音重点。

【解 析】选[B]。男士的话it’s just at the tip of my tongue为听音重点,[B]是对男士的话的同义转述,故答案为[B]。sth. is at the tip of one’s tongue意为“话到嘴边,某人记得某事但一时没想起来”。

13. M: My father wants me to see a new kid — a guy named Tom. How about going with me? W: Okay. I might as well go. Nothing better to do. Q: What can we learn from the conversation?

【听前预测】由选项中的should,will,might,Going to等可知,本题考查将来的动作。 【解 析】选[D]。对话中男士提到to see a new kid,女士回答I might as well go.

14. W: Have Michael and Joan Smith had a baby yet? They’ve been married for two years now. M: Michael indicated to me that they’d postpone having children until he gets his law degree. Q: How do the Smiths feel about children?

They,don’t want,wishes to have children等可知,对话可能与They是否要孩子有关。 【解 析】选[B]。对话中男士提到postpone having children until…(推迟要孩子,直到……),[B] 中的not…for the time being对应postpone…until…,want children对应having children,故答案为[B]。for the time being 意为“暂时;眼下,目前”。

15. W: Mr. David, you are such a nice young man and you have been taking good care of me ever

since I first arrived here. I shall always feel grateful to you for everything you’ve done for

me.

M: It’s very kind of you to say so, but really I don’t think I had done nearly enough. Q: What does the man mean? 由选项中的He has done和he could等可知,男士的话为听音重点。

【解 析】选[D]。男士的转折表述but really I don’t think I had done nearly enough.(但我觉得自己做的真的不够)为听音重点。

16. M: I’ve been working out at the gym since February so… I’d been waiting to get in better

shape.

W: You look terrific! Seems like all your hard work has paid off. Q: What does the woman mean?

I’ve been working out...to get in better shape(我一直在锻炼…… Seems like all your hard work has paid off(看上去你的辛苦努力得到了回报)表明,男士经过努力锻炼体形已经改善了,故答案为[C]。

17. M: Why did Margaret call yesterday?

W: She wanted to pick up some magazines she lent me. Q: What do we learn from the conversation?

She (Margaret) wanted to pick up some magazines she lent me(Margaret要取回她借给我的杂志),[D]为该话的同义转述,故为答案。

18. M: You know I had to leave the basketball game halfway through last night, so I never found

out who won.

W: Well, don’t look at me. I was just a few minutes behind you. Q: What does the woman mean?

She didn’t,She’s also curious等表明,女士的话为听音重点。

I was just a few minutes behind you(我就比你晚几分钟提前离开)为听音重点,[B]是对女士的话的同义转述,故为答案。干扰项[D]中的behind(指空间)是对女士说的behind(指时间)在意义上的干扰。

Now you will hear the two long conversations.

Conversation One

Students,much securer,on campus,rent an apartment,choose their roommates,can cook,rent/ Renters,apartments等推断,对话与学生在校内居住还是校外租公寓有关,可能涉及到各自的好处或坏处等。 M: Good morning, Ms. Smith. Welcome to our today’s show. W: Thank you.

M: Today we’re going to talk about the living of foreign students in our country. You know, for many international students, coming to the United States and living here and studying can be quite a frightening experience, especially when finding housing. Can you give them some advice?

W: Sure. Fortunately, there are a variety of options that students can look to. They can choose to live on campus or off campus.

M: Then can you say something about on-campus living?

W: Well, I think first of all for first-time students, coming and living on campus in dormitories can provide a certain level of security because of its closeness to campus facilities since commuting without a car can be quite an experience, especially when you have to commute long distances. Often in dormitories, meals might be provided, and this can allow students to devote time to their academics, rather than housekeeping.

M: That sounds quite good. Is there anything students should pay attention to when living on campus?

W: Yes, students should be aware that they’ll be required to abide by certain regulations dealing with student conduct as part of the contract and living on campus. M: Then what about off-campus living?

W: Like living in dormitories, uh, living off campus in an apartment requires little or no maintenance specifically because usually it is handled by someone else. Also, when you live off campus, there might be a certain amount of flexibility in choosing roommates that you might not have when living on campus. But you should be aware that renters may be responsible for furnishing their own apartments.

M: Well, thank you, Ms. Smith, for the information you have provided for us. W: My pleasure.

Questions 19 to 22 are based on the conversation you have just heard. 19. Which of the following advantages is related to on-campus living?

Meals…free on campus,much securer等表明,本题可能考查学生 在校内住宿的好处。 [B] Students are much securer on campus是对对话中living on campus…can provide…security的同义转述。

20. What should students remember when living on campus according to the woman? 【解析】选[A]。 They, have to,be required, housing rules等表明,本题可能考查住宿的某些要求。根据对话中女士提到的they’ll be required to abide by certain regulations… [A] They may have to obey certain housing rules是对此的同义转述,故为答案。

【点睛】问题中的living on campus是听音关键,students should remember对应对话中的students should be aware。

21. What is the advantage of off-campus living compared with on-campus living?

Renters...needn’t,can,are free to等表明,本题可能考查在校外租房的好处。由对话中女士提到的live off campus...a certain amount of flexibility in choosing roommates(住在校外,在选择室友时有一定的灵活性)可知,答案为[C]。

[C] Renters have freedom to select their roommates.是对对话中的a certain amount of flexibility in choosing roommates的同义转述。

22. What should students do if they prepare to live in apartments off campus?

由对话中女士提到的renters may be responsible for furnishing可知,租房者需要负责家具,即需要自己买家具,故答案为[D]。

Conversation Two

【听前预测】预览三道题各选项,结合works as a babysitter, offered the job,Register in,university等推断,对话很可能与学生的兼职及如何找兼职有关。 M: Where are you going, Catherine? Today is Saturday. W: Saturday isn’t a holiday for me anymore. I have to tutor for three hours every Saturday afternoon.

M: That’s great. I wish I could find a part-time job to make a little pocket money. How did you find this job?

W: I saw a “Tutor Wanted” notice stuck on a light pole near the bus stop. I phoned the number and I got the job. It’s not too hard to find a part-time job these days. But Richard, studying should always come first. Do you think that you have enough time to handle a part-time job? M: It’s hard to say. If I can get a job, I will try very hard to make good use of my time.

W: We do spend too much time hanging around and doing nothing. Richard, your English is perfect. Why don’t you find a job teaching English?

M: But I don’t have any teaching experience. Speaking and teaching are two different things.

W: I don’t have any experience either. We’re just students. People know this. But we are young and energetic, and the most important thing is that we don’t ask for as much pay as professional teachers do. M: OK! Where should I start?

W: You can post some notices on the community bulletin board and some other places. But remember: don’t post them on the wire poles because you’ll probably be fined for it. M: Thank you for your advice, Catherine. W: My pleasure. Good luck.

Questions 23 to 25 are based on the conversation you have just heard. 23. What does the woman do on Saturday afternoons?

【解析】选[C]。选项中的She,homework,works尤其是attends weekend classes等表明,本题可能考查She周末的安排。 I have to tutor…every Saturday afternoon.

[C] She does some teaching work.是对对话中I have to tutor的同义转述。

24. How did the woman find the part-time job?

【解析】选[B]。选项中的friends introduced,teachers recommended,offered the job等表明,it指工作,本题考查She找到工作的途径。 I saw a “Tutor Wanted” notice…near the bus stop可知,通过车站附近电线杆上贴的“找家教”广告,女士找到当家教这份工作,故答案为[B]。

25. What does the woman suggest the man do when starting to find a job?

Ask his teachers,

You can post some notices on the community bulletin board可知,女士建议男士在社区布告栏上贴个启示,故答案为[D]。

Section B

Visitors to Britain are always complaining about English food. But they do not really know what they are talking about because they rarely get a chance to eat it. Most of the restaurants in large towns have foreign owners and serve foreign food. When visitors are invited to eat in an English home, their hosts often feel they must offer them something foreign and exotic.

Those of us who do know English food are aware that at its best it can be really very good. On the other hand it is true to say that it’s sometimes terrible. Part of the problem is that we are not really interested in food — we eat to live, we do not live to eat. So we don’t generally spend the necessary time and effort needed to cook really good meals. We prefer food that is simple and easy to cook, or ready prepared food which only needs heating up before eating.

You can find the best English foods in small restaurants in the country away from the large cities, where life is slower and people are not in such a hurry. But, of course, most visitors come to London because they are interested in shopping and sightseeing. They do not come because of the food, so why should they complain about it?

Questions 26 to 28 are based on the passage you have just heard. 26. What can we learn from the passage?

But they do not really know what they are talking about because they rarely get a chance to eat it,it指的是English food,选项[D]是对该句的同义转述,故为答案。

27. What do we learn about the speaker’s viewpoint from the passage? 短文中speaker说we are not really interested in food — we eat to live,we do not live to eat,也就是说,我们为了活着而吃,而不是为了吃而活着,故答案为[C]。

28. What is the conclusion suggested by the speaker?

【解析】选[A]。

Passage Two

【听前预测】选项中的self-respect,a sense of honor,Live Truthfully等表明,短文可能与生活态度有关。 Do you want to live with a strong sense of peacefulness, happiness, goodness, and self-respect? The collection of happiness actions broadly categorized as “honor” help you create this life of good feelings.

Here’s an example to show how honorable actions create happiness.

Say a store clerk fails to charge us for an item. If we keep silent, and profit from the clerk’s mistake, we would drive home with a sense of sneaky excitement. Later we might tell our family or friends about our good fortune. On the other hand, if we tell the clerk about the uncharged item, the clerk would be grateful and thank us for our honesty. We would leave the store with a quiet sense of honor that we might never share with another soul.

Then, what is it to do with our sense of happiness?

In the first case, where we don’t tell the clerk, a couple of things would happen. Deep down inside we would know ourselves as a type of thief. In the process, we would lose some peace of mind and self-respect. We would also demonstrate that we cannot be trusted, since we advertise our dishonor by telling our family and friends. We damage our own reputations by telling others. In contrast, bringing the error to the clerk’s attention causes different things to happen. Immediately the clerk knows us to be honorable. Upon leaving the store, we feel honorable and our self-respect is increased. Whenever we take honorable action we gain the deep internal rewards of goodness and a sense of nobility.

There is a beautiful positive cycle that is created by living a life of honorable actions. Honorable thoughts lead to honorable actions. Honorable actions lead us to a happier existence. And it’s easy to think and act honorably when we’re happy. While the positive cycle can be difficult to start, once it’s started, it’s easy to continue. Keeping on doing good deeds brings us peace of mind, which is important for our happiness.

Questions 29 to 32 are based on the passage you have just heard. 29. What does the positive action in the example contribute to?

【解析】选[A]。短文一开始引出话题:快乐的生活;接着说话者用一个事例的正反行为来说明这一主题,其中提到采取正面行为(bringing the error to the clerk’s attention,也就是前面提到的tell the clerk about the uncharged item)所产生的结果:...our self-respect is increased,由此可知,在这个事例中,正面的行为会增加我们的自尊,故答案为[A]。 30. What does the speaker think about keeping silent about the uncharged item?

It is equal to lying/stealing等表明,本题考查对It的看法,听音时注意It指代什么。由短文中提到的...we don’t tell the clerk...Deep down inside we would know ourselves as a type of thief可知,说话者认为不告诉店员没有收钱的物品是一种偷窃,故答案为[B]。

31. How will we feel if we let the clerk know her mistake?

if we tell the clerk about the uncharged item...We would leave the store with a 感觉。

quiet sense of honor...。由此可知,如果告诉收款员她的错误,我们就会感到很有面子(sense of honor),下面提到的...bringing the error to the clerk’s attention...we feel honorable也印证了这一点,故答案为[C]。

32. Which can be the best title of this passage?

Do you want to live with a strong sense of peacefulness, happiness, goodness, and self-respect? 接下来举例说明how honorable actions create happiness,接着分析honorable actions与sense of happiness的关系,最后说明Honorable thoughts lead to honorable actions. Honorable actions lead us to a happier existence,由此可知,短文主要说明通过Honorable Actions来获得Happiness这一道理,故答案为[D]。

Passage Three

We’ve been looking at fear from a biological perspective, and someone asked whether the tendency to be fearful is genetic. Well, some studies done with mice indicate that mammals do inherit fearfulness to some degree. In one study, for instance, a group of mice was placed in a brightly-lit open box with no hiding places. Some of the mice wandered around the box and didn’t appear to be bothered of being so exposed. But other mice didn’t move. They stayed up against one wall, which indicated that they were afraid. Well, when fearful mice, or you might say anxious mice like the ones who stayed in one place, when mice like these were bred with one another repeatedly, after about 12 generations or so, then all of the offspring showed similar signs of fearfulness. And even when a new-born mouse from this generation was raised by a mother and with other mice who were not fearful, that mouse still tended to be fearful as an adult. Now why is this? Well, it’s thought that specific genes in an animal’s body have an influence on anxious behavior. These are genes that are associated with particular nerve-cell receptors in the brain. And the degree of overall fearfulness in the mammal seems to depend in large part on the presence or absence of these nerve-cell receptors. And this appears to apply to humans as well by the way. But while a tendency towards anxiety and fear may well be an inherited trait, the specific form that the fear takes has more to do with the individual’s environment. So a particular fear, like the fear of snakes or the fear of spiders, say, is not genetic, but the overall tendency to have fearful responses is.

Questions 33 to 35 are based on the passage you have just heard. 33. What is the talk mainly about? We’ve been looking at fear...that mammals do inherit fearfulness to some degree可知,本文主要讨论的是:Whether fearfulness is a genetic trait,故答案为[C]。

34. How did some of the mice in the study demonstrate that they were afraid?

But other mice didn’t...which indicated that they were afraid可知,remained close to one wall与stayed 老鼠通过紧挨着墙壁的动作表现出了它们的恐惧,

up against one wall同义,故答案为[D]。

35. Why does the professor mention snakes and spiders?

【解析】选[A]。选项均以“To + do”开头,以及其中的show the relationship,give examples,compare等表明,本题可能考查举例子的目的。根据短文中提到的…the fear…has more to do with…environment. So…fear…like the fear of snakes or the fear of spiders…
