Industrial pollution is not only a problem for the countries of Europe and North America. It is also an extremely serious
problem in some developing countries. For these countries, economic growth is a very important goal. They want to attract new industries, and so they put few controls on industries which cause pollution.
Cubatao, an industrial town of 85,000 people in Brazil, is an example of the connection between industrial development and pollution. In 1954, Cubatao had no industry. Today it has more than twenty large factories, which produce many pollutants (污染物质). The people of the town are exposed to a large number of poisonous substances in their environment and the consequences of this exposure can be clearly seen. Birth defects are extremely common. Among children and adults, lung problems are sometimes twelve times more common in Cubatao than in other places.
It is true that Brazil, like many other countries, has laws against pollution, but these laws are not enforced strictly enough. It is cheaper for companies to ignore the laws and pay the fines than to buy the expensive equipment that will reduce the pollution. It is clear, therefore, that economic growth is more important to the government than the health of the workers. However, the responsibility does not completely lie with the Brazilian government. The example of Cubatao shows that international companies are not acting in a responsible way, either. A number of the factories in the town are owned by large companies from France, Italy, and the U.S. They are doing things in Brazil that they would not be able to do at home. If they caused the same amount of pollution at home, they would be severely punished or even put out of business. 1. Why don’t developing countries have strict pollution controls?
A、Because the new industries they want to attract do not cause much pollution. B、Because pollution is not a serious problem for developing countries.
C、Because they fail to realize that the balance of nature will be disturbed by some pollutants.
D、Because if developing countries put stricter controls on industry, fewer companies would build new plants there. 2. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning Cubatao?
A、To show that industrial development can progress very quickly in developing countries. B、To show that the pollution problem in Brazil is extremely serious.
C、To show that industrial growth causes pollution problems for developing countries.
D、To show that pollution is threatening the lives of many people and the whole economy of Brazil 3. Why do some foreign companies like to set up their plants in Brazil? A、Because the investment environment in Brazil is suitable for them.
B、Because they will not be severely punished if they cause pollution in Brazil. C、Because they can make a big profit as the labour cost in Brazil is relatively low.
D、Because they can act in an irresponsible way in Brazil because there are no pollution laws there. 4. The work “enforced” L. 2, Para. 3) could best be replaced by which of the following? A、carried out B、drawn up C、looked over D、put out 5. What can we conclude from the passage?
A、In Brazil, companies which ignore pollution laws have to pay fines. B、The Brazilian government pays great attention to the health of workers. C、Many foreign companies are out of business in Brazil for their pollution. D、Most international companies act responsibly in Brazil.

In Western countries people have been using the installment(分期付款) plan since the first half of the twentieth century. Today, a large number of families in Great Britain buy furniture, household goods and cars by installments. The buyer pays one quarter or one third of the price as a down payment (预付定金)when the goods are 1 to him. He then makes 2 payments, weekly or monthly, until the full price is paid up. The legal 3 of the goods remains with the seller until the final payment has been made. Installment buying has advantages and 4 . It can help couples with small incomes to furnish their homes and start housekeeping. It increases the 5 for goods, and in this way helps business and employment. There is, however, the danger that when business is bad, installment buying may end suddenly, 6 business much worse. This may result in a great increase in 7 . If the people on the installment plan lose their jobs, they will probably not be able to make their payments. If great numbers of people are not able to pay their installment debts there is a possibility that businessmen cannot collect their debts and will 8 lose money. If businessmen lose money or fail to make a 9 profit, it becomes more likely to have a depression. This is why, in some countries, the government controls the installment plan by fixing the amount of the down payment and installments to 10 people from buying more than they can pay for on the installment plan.

The U.S. generates about four billion tons of solid waste a year. More than 90 percent is composed of agricultural and mining wastes. About 3 percent is from industrial wastes. 250 million tons of garbage comes out from homes, schools, office buildings, stores and hospitals.
This mass of metals, paper, food, plastic, rubber and glass, which is all mixed together, seems of no earthly use to anyone. Or is it? Many efforts across the country indicate that new technology, properly applied, might some day turn these millions of tons of garbage into an excellent source of raw materials for new uses.
Several new projects are carried out to study the possibility of treating wastes through pyrolysis—a system of reducing garbage to basic chemicals, liquids and gases which have commercial value. In Florida, a special tube system provides automatic transport of garbage to a central collection building.
In short, many new ideas are being tested, and many will be needed, since no one method is likely to prove suitable everywhere.
However, many difficult economic and social questions must be answered before real progress can be made. Can recovered materials compete with new materials? What will be needed as encouragement to make resource recovery work? Will citizens pay the cost of changing our waste system?
1. The author suggests that garbage from home and public places _______.
A、makes up the largest portion of solid waste B、makes up a small portion of solid waste C、 is not really considered as solid waste D、is considered of no practical value 2. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the question \"Or is it?\" in Paragraph Three? A、Or is it true that this mass of solid waste is of no practical use? B、Or is it right to bury all this mass of solid waste under earth? C、Or is it wise to mix all this mass of solid waste together?
D、Or is it worthwhile to make so many efforts across the country? 3. Pyrolysis is a process which _______. A、treats a large amount of industrial wastes B、turns garbage into a new source of raw materials C、mixes together different kinds of solid waste D、provides garbage for a collection building 4. Which of the following is true concerning the issue of waste recovery? A、Many new ideas have been adopted. B、The present systems have been widely used. C、Different methods are required in different places. D、No garbage has been proved useful everywhere. 5. It can be implied from the last paragraph that _______.
A、great progress has already been made in resource recovery B、recovered materials will be able to compete with new materials
C、working people in the U. S. have been encouraged to recover solid waste D、citizens may be unwilling to pay the costs of changing the waste system

Kate, a student in 8th grade, asked lots of questions in math class—until the teacher told her to stop. “He said I was confusing the other kids with my questions,” she recalls. “When boys asked questions, he took them a lot more seriously.”
You might have thought that such obvious forms of discrimination (歧视) had ended by now. But Esther Greenglass, a psychology professor at York University in Toronto, says many recent studies have found that girls may still be faced with mixed messages about self-confidence and success, which can lower their self-esteem and discourage them from achieving their potential.
The problem worsens at about age 11 or 12, when girls start hitting puberty (青春期) and discovering boys. Many girls’ grades drop, and so does their self-esteem. “Girls get the message that, if you’re going to be popular, you can’t be too smart because the boys won’t like you,” says Greenglass, who has written extensively on sex roles and discrimination. Often, girls also sense that boys are considered more capable. In studies in the United States, researchers found that when teachers asked questions, they almost always made eye contact with boys, unless they had attended courses raising their level of awareness. Adding to the problem, according to Greenglass, is the lack of female role models in old textbooks still found in many Canadian schools.
How are girls’ attitudes affected? Studies have shown that boys usually attribute their success to their superior ability, while girls attribute their own success to luck. When boys fail at a task, they tend to blame it on external factors; when girls fail, they blame their own lack of ability. Boys are more likely to try a second time to succeed. 1. The first paragraph intends to tell us that _______. A、girls usually ask more questions than boys in class B、girls often confuse teachers with many questions C、teachers tend to give much more attention to boys D、teachers believe that boys ask more serious questions 2. Findings by Professor Esther Greenglass indicate that _______.
A、sex discrimination in schools has disappeared in CanadaB、Canadian school girls are more self-confident than boys C、school girls in Canada are confused about their roles D、in Canada girls and boys achieve equal success at school 3. Researchers in the United States found that when teachers asked questions, _______. A、they would first turned to boys for answers B、they wanted to raise the awareness of boys C、boys responded to them Immediately D、girls avoided eye contact with teachers 4. We can learn from the passage that girls' lack of self-confidence has led to _______. A、their misjudgment of their own success and failure B、boys’ misunderstanding of their superiority C、their inability to achieve academic success D、boys’ blaming external factors for their failures 5. What is the best title of the passage? A、Male and Female Role Models. B、Puberty and Sex Difference. C、Girls, Boys, and Success. D、Sex Roles and Discrimination.

In some urban centers, workaholism is so common that people do not consider it unusual: They accept the lifestyle as normal. Government workers in Washington D.C, for example, frequently work sixty to seventy hours a week. They don’t do this because they have to; they do it because they want to.
Workaholism can be a serious problem. Because true workaholics would rather work than do anything else, they probably don’t know how to relax; that is, they might not enjoy movies, sports, or other types of entertainment. Most of all, they hate to sit and do nothing. The lives of workaholics are usually stressful, and this tension and worry can cause health problems such as heart attacks or stomach disorders. In addition, typical workaholics don’t pay much attention to their families. They spend little time with their children, and their marriages may end in divorce.
Is workaholism always dangerous? Perhaps not. There are, certainly, people who work well under stress. Some studies show that many workaholies have great energy and interest in life. Their work is so pleasurable that they are actually very happy. For most workaholics, work and entertainment are the same thing. Their jobs provide them with a challenge; this keeps them busy and creative.
Why do workaholics enjoy their jobs so much? There are several advantages to work. Of course, it provides people with paychecks, and this is important. But it offers more than financial security. It provides people with self-confidence; they have a feeling of satisfaction when they’ve produced a challenging piece of work and are able to say,“I made that.” Psychologists claim that work gives people an identity through participation in work, they get a sense of self and individualism. In addition, most jobs provide people with a socially acceptable way to meet others. Perhaps some people are compulsive about their work, but their addiction seems to be a safe-even an advantageous-one. 1. A workaholic is a person who . A. often behaves in a strange way B. is often forced to work overtime C. tends to enjoy working long hours D. tends to hold higher positions that others. 2. The dog, called Prince, was an intelligent animal and a slave to Williams. From morning till night, when Williams was at home, Prince never left his sight, practically ignoring all other members of the family. The dog had a number of clearly defined duties, for which Williams had patiently trained him and, like the good pupil he was, Prince lived for the chance to demonstrate his abilities. When Williams wanted to put on his boots, he would murmur “Boots” and within seconds the dog would drop them at his feet. At nine every morning, Prince ran off to the general store in the village, returning shortly not only with Williams’ daily paper but with a half-ounce packet of Williams’ favorite tobacco, John Rhiney’s Mixed. A gun-dog by breed, Prince possessed a large soft mouth specially evolved for the safe carrying of hunted creatures, so the paper and the tobacco came to no harm, never even showing a tooth mark.
Williams was a railway man, an engine driver, and he wore a blue uniform which smelled of oil and oil fuel. He had to work at odd times ---“days”, “late days” or “nights”. Over the years Prince got to know these periods of work and rest, knew when his master would leave the house and return, and the dog did not waste this knowledge. If Williams overslept, as he often did, Prince barked at the bedroom door until he woke, much to the annoyance of the family. On his return, Williams’ slippers were brought to him, the paper and tobacco too if previously undelivered.
A curious thing happened to Williams during the snow and ice of last winter. One evening he slipped and fell on the icy pavement somewhere between the village and his home. He was so badly shaken that he stayed in bed for three days; and not until he got up and dressed again did he discover that he had lost his wallet containing over fifty pounds.
The house was turned upside down in the search, but the wallet was not found. However, two days later--- that was five days after the fall---Prince dropped the wallet into William’s hand. Very muddy, stained and wet through, the little case still contained fifty-three pounds, Williams’ driving license and a few other papers. Where the dog had found it no one could tell, but found that he had recognized it probably by the faint oily smell on the worn leather. 1. What does the passage tell us about gun-dogs? A.
