1.Scope*
1.1Thistestmethodcoversthedeterminationofthenormalconsistencyofhydrauliccement.
1.2Units—ThevaluesstatedinSIunitsaretoberegardedasstandard.Nootherunitsofmeasurementareincludedinthisstandard.
1.3Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappro-priatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplica-bilityofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.See1.4foraspecificwarningstatement.

3.SignificanceandUse
3.1Thistestmethodisintendedtobeusedtodeterminetheamountofwaterrequiredtopreparehydrauliccementpastesfortesting.
4.Apparatus
4.1ReferenceMassesandDevicesforDeterminingMass,conformingtotherequirementsofSpecificationC1005.Thedevicesfordeterminingmassshallbeevaluatedforprecisionandbiasatatotalloadof1000g.
4.2GlassGraduates,200or250-mLcapacity,andconform-ingtotherequirementsofPracticeC490.
4.3VicatApparatus—TheVicatapparatusshallconsistofaframeA(Fig.1)bearingamovablerodB,weighing300g,oneendC,theplungerend,being10mmindiameterforadistanceofatleast50mm,andtheotherendhavingaremovableneedleD,1mmindiameterand50mminlength.TherodBisreversible,andcanbeheldinanydesiredpositionbyasetscrewE,andhasanadjustableindicatorF,whichmovesoverascale(graduatedinmillimetres)attachedtotheframeA.ThepasteisheldinarigidconicalringG,restingonaplanenonabsorptivesquarebaseplateH,about100mmoneachside.TherodBshallbemadeofstainlesssteelhavingahardnessofnotlessthan35HRC(SeeNote1),andshallbestraightwiththeplungerendwhichisperpendiculartotherodaxis.Theringshallbemadeofanoncorroding,nonabsorbentmaterial,andshallhaveaninsidediameterof70mmatthebaseand60mmatthetop,andaheightof40mm.Inadditiontotheabove,theVicatapparatusshallconformtothefollowingrequirements:

pathofabout150mmfromonehandtoanothersoastoproduceanearlysphericalmassthatmaybeeasilyinsertedintotheVicatringwithaminimumamountofadditionalmanipu-lation.Presstheball,restinginthepalmofonehand,intothelargerendoftheconicalringG,Fig.1,heldintheotherhand,completelyfillingtheringwithpaste.Removetheexcessatthelargerendbyasinglemovementofthepalmofthehand.PlacetheringonitslargerendonthebaseplateH,andsliceofftheexcesspasteatthesmallerendatthetopoftheringbyasingleobliquestrokeofasharp-edgedtrowelheldataslightanglewiththetopofthering,andsmooththetop,ifnecessary,withafewlighttouchesofthepointedendofthetrowel.Duringtheseoperationsofcuttingandsmoothing,takecarenottocompressthepaste.
6.3ConsistencyDetermination—Centerthepasteconfinedinthering,restingontheplate,undertherodB,Fig.1,theplungerendCofwhichshallbebroughtincontactwiththesurfaceofthepaste,andtightentheset-screwE.ThensetthemovableindicatorFtotheupperzeromarkofthescale,ortakeaninitialreading,andreleasetherodimmediately.Thismustnotexceed30saftercompletionofmixing.Theapparatusshallbefreeofallvibrationsduringthetest.Thepasteshallbeofnormalconsistencywhentherodsettlestoapoint1061mmbelowtheoriginalsurfacein30safterbeingreleased.Maketrialpasteswithvaryingpercentagesofwateruntilthenormalconsistencyisobtained.Makeeachtrialwithfreshcement.7.Calculation
7.1Calculatetheamountofwaterrequiredfornormalconsistencytothenearest0.1%andreportittothenearest0.5%oftheweightofthedrycement.
8.PrecisionandBias
8.1Thesingleoperator-instrumentprecisionhasbeenfoundtobe0.25(1S),andthemultilaboratoryprecisionhasbeenfoundtobe0.35(1S)asdefinedinPracticeE177;therefore,theresultsoftwoproperlyconductedtestsbythesameoperatorinalaboratoryshouldagreewithin0.7percentagepoint,andtestresultsbetweentwolaboratoriesshouldagreewith1.0percent-agepoint95%ofthetime.
