Should Class Attendance Be Required?
Nowadays required class attendance is very common at colleges and universities. Most people take it for granted that students should attend all the classes required by school. However still some others do not agree with this argument. They don't think it should be compulsory for students to attend class.
As for me, I'm in favor of the latter opinion. The following reasons can account for my preference. First, the rigid attendance policy does not benefit students' studies. For example, a student may have to give up a lecture which he finds useful to his studies simply because he dare not run the risk of being penalized for his absence in his course. Second, the lectures of some teachers are not always constructive. A student should be allowed to tell for himself whether an in class experience is worthwhile. Finally and most importantly, there is no proving correlation between class attendance and academic performance. A student may never be absent in a course, but who knows whether or not he is just sitting there daydreaming all the time.
In conclusion, required class attendance may secure one hundred percent attendance for a course. But it is not necessarily really beneficial to us. As college students we should learn to make the right decisions for ourselves about whether to attend a class.

Machine Translation and Human Translation
In recent years, all kinds of electronic dictionaries and translation software have been developed. With the development of technology, these electronic dictionaries and software can help us translate not only words and phrases, but even sentences and paragraphs. So some people come to the conclusion that machine translation will replace traditional human translation. However, I couldn't agree with this argument.
Admittedly, translation machines and software bring much convenience for our study and work. With them, we needn't bother to live through the heavy dictionaries. However, machine translation has its disadvantages. First, generally speaking,
translation software only can give direct translation, which is sometimes not in accordance with the original articles in logic and meaning. Second, some people depend on electronic dictionaries and software too much, which is unfavorable to their improvement in language ability.
Considering the above mentioned, I think that machine translation cannot replace human translation, but it is a good
complementary to human translation. Therefore, we should combine machine translation with human translation effectively.

How to make full use of reference books?
Nowadays reference books have become a problem of great concern for both teachers and students. There are many kinds of reference books available in the book market. A smarter use of these books is certainly beneficial. But the misuse and over-use of them may cause a lot of problems.
First of all, teaching reference books might make the students less attentive in class. Armed with reference books, many
students may think that they know what the teacher is going to talk about. So they may not listen to the teacher in class at all.
Secondly, some students rely on the reference books too much, which is unfavorable to the improvement of their ability to work out the solutions for themselves. Thirdly, there are some reference books with many mistakes, which might mislead the students.
Considering the above mentioned, we should be careful in selecting and using reference books. Firstly, we should check the contents of the book carefully, but not only pay attention to the brand of the publishing house. In addition we can turn to the recommendation of teachers and students around us. Besides, reference books are just an assistant, so we shouldn't rely on them too much. Only in this way can we make full use of reference books.

University mergence is a new trend in university development. As a hot topic on and off campus, it has received much of public attention. People's attitudes towards it vary greatly.
People who are against it see it as a hasty decision, which has some potential problems. They claim, for instance, located far away from each other, universities involved with mergence are usually faced with the tough problem of management.
Other people who favor it see it as a step that universities take towards the goal of first-rate world university. They argue that, only through mergence can university take full play of advantages and make up their disadvantages. Like the mergence between Tsinghua University and the Institute of Applied Arts. The university's strengths in the field of high technology complement the latter university that has a reputation for art. They also point out that by mergence the Chinese universities will increase their competitive power in the world.
In my opinion, the university mergence has more advantages than disadvantages, but the university should take into account the potential dangers resulting from the mergence.
25 Will network classrooms replace traditional classrooms?
With the popular visitation of the internet, network classrooms are gaining more and more popularity. As a new teaching pattern, network classrooms have become an effective compliment to traditional classrooms. So some people propose on question “Will network classrooms replace traditional classrooms?”
As to this question, the opinions vary from one to another. Some people think it quite possible for network classrooms to take the place of traditional classrooms. First, network classrooms needn’t have face-to-face communication, and are not limited by time and place, which facilities both teachers and students. Secondly, network classrooms release teachers from repeating the same contents. Since the video or audio material can be played time and again.
However, many people have opposite stand points. They say that with online courses students like direct communication with teachers and their confusion can not be solved instantly. In addition, the computer system can not be guaranty to work staidly all the time. Personally, both network classrooms and traditional classrooms are necessary for students. If traditional teaching patterns and motor ones like network classrooms can be combined together, more fruitful education is sure to be realized.

Campus Lectures
Nowadays more and more lectures are held on college campuses. These lectures are usually on different topics, such as arts, life, psychology, the economy, world issues. Lectures have become an important part of college campus life. Undoubtedly college students have benefited a lot from various lectures. Above all, the lectures broaden the students' knowledge horizon and cultivate their interest in different fields.
What's more, some lectures teach students practical knowledge and skills, such as how to make up and how to become self-confident. Besides, lectures make the life of college students colorful and enjoyable.
With these merits, lectures are a good complement to required classes. However, if a student spends too much time attending lectures, his regular study might be affected. Therefore, in my opinion, college students should attend good lectures on condition that they do their class work as well.

Does a Student Need Private Tutoring?
A recent investigation shows that about 70 percent of middle school students in cities have private tutors. Such a popular practice indicates that parents are attaching greater importance to their children's education. However, private tutoring has both advantages and disadvantages.
On the one hand, many parents have not enough ability or time to help their children in study. Private tutoring is a good solution to this problem. In addition, private tutoring is usually one-to-one, so the teacher can know the weak points as well as the strong points of the pupil, and thus teaching is, in most cases, directly to the point.
On the other hand, private tutoring has its own disadvantages. For one thing, it takes up so much of the pupil’s time that he can hardly find enough time for rest and entertainment. For another, some tutors, busy “shuttling” from one family to another, tend to be unable to concentrate on their teaching duties as tutors.
Considering the above-mentioned, I think the disadvantages of private tutoring outweigh its advantages. In my opinion, greater emphasis should be laid on classroom teaching and practice, on the improvement of teaching quality and on the tapping of the pupil’s potential. Only in this way can a new generation be healthily brought up.

Is Good Appearance More Important than Capability?
Old people often tell the young, “Don’t judge a person by his appearance”, meaning capability is more important than appearance. However, nowadays, with more interviewers putting emphasis on looks and the appearance of the applicants(独立主格结构表示原因), a lot of people come to the conclusion(得出结论) that appearance is more important than capability.
老人们常告诉年轻人：“不要以貌取人”，意思就是说能力比容貌更加重要。然而，现如今，鉴于更多的人在面试中强调面貌，因此，许多人得出这样的结论容貌比能力更加的重要。
As for me, I can’t agree with this argument. Good appearance is pleasant, but capability is more important, because it demonstrates one’s self-cultivation and practical values. It shows the efforts and the glory of acquiring something through one’s hard work, whereas good looks bespeak no struggle of the individual. Besides, maybe sometimes a beautiful face can help a girl acquire a good position, but in the long run(长久看来) it is her talent not her look that really works in her career development.(强调句)
至于我，我不同意这样的观点。好的容貌是悦人的，但是能力更加重要，因为它能证明一个人的自我修养和实际的价值。它表明通过一个人的努力而获得某种东西的努力和光荣，而不是好的容貌使你不劳而获。此外，或许有时一个美丽的容貌能够帮助一个女孩获得一个好的职位，但是长久看来是她的资质不是她的容貌在她的事业发展中起着作用。
Therefore, those without good appearance(作those的定语) needn’t feel depressed because one’s success depends on his capability; those with good appearance have to work hard since good appearance cannot bring a person final success.

In recent years, log has become very popular. More and more people have created their own blogs and often visit others' blogs. They use blog to review their inner voice or collect and share thoughts and things they find interesting. In brief, log is an online diary or frequently updated personal page.
Why does blog become so popular in such a short time? Firstly, it is the widespread of Internet that provides a platform for the appearance and popularity of blog. Secondly, anyone can create his own blog as he wishes. log has no fixed rules and needn't professional knowledge and skills, which enables millions of people to have a voice and connect with others. Thirdly,blog covers all kinds of topics from daily life to political forums, from individual thoughts to world events. Among millions of blogs, you can always find something you are interested in.
However, log has some problems. For one thing, plagiarism in blog is not unusual. The protection of blog copyright cannot be guaranteed. For another, many blog content so in and mass and some even include unhealthy things. Therefore, blog still has a long way to run before it becomes mature.
