三、阅读理解 (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

请认真阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。 A

Three years ago, five parrots were set free in a wild place of Arizona, thousands of miles from the Channel Islands in Jersey where they had been looked after by zookeepers. No evolutionary

strategies informed them how to behave in this new landscape of mountainous pine forest unoccupied by their kind for 50 years. To the researchers’ surprise, they failed to make contact with a group of wild parrots imported from Mexico and set free at the same time. Within 24 hours the reintroducing ended in failure, and the poor birds were back in cages, on their way to the safety of the Arizona reintroduction programme.

Ever since then, the programme has enjoyed great success, mainly because the birds now being set free are Mexican birds illegally caught in the wild, confiscated (没收) on arrival north of the border, and raised by their parents in the safety of the programme. The experience shows how little we know about the behaviour and psychology (心理) of parrots, as Peter Bennett, a bird researcher, points out: “Reintroducing species of high intelligence like parrots is a lot more difficult. People like parrots, always treating them as nothing more than pets or valuable ‘collectables’”.

Now that many species of parrot are in immediate danger of dying out, biologists are working together to study the natural history and the behaviour of this family of birds. Last year was an

important turning point: conservationists founded the World Parrot Trust, based at Hayle in Cornwall, to support research into both wild and caged birds.

Research on parrots is vital for two reasons. First, as the Arizona programme showed, when reintroducing parrots to the wild, we need to be aware of what the birds must know if they are to

龙源期刊网 http://www.qikan.com.cn

survive in their natural home. We also need to learn more about the needs of parrots kept as pets, particularly as the Trust’s campaign does not attempt to discourage the practice, but rather urges people who buy parrots as pets to choose birds raised by humans.

36. What do we know about the area where the five parrots were reintroduced? A. Its landscape is new to parrots of their kind. B. It used to be home to parrots of their kind. C. It is close to where they had been kept. D. Pine trees were planted to attract birds.

37. Why are researches on parrots important according to the passage? A. The Trust shows great concern for the programme. B. We need to know more about how to preserve parrots. C. Many people are interested in collecting parrots. D. Parrots’ intelligence may some day benefit people. 38. According to the passage, people are advised. A. to treat wild and caged parrots equally B. to set up comfortable homes for parrots C. not to keep wild parrots as pets D. not to let more parrots go to the wild B

Do you want to live forever? By the year 2050, you might actually get your wish—if you are willing to leave your biological body and live in silicon circuits (半导体电路). But long before then, perhaps as early as 2010, some measures will begin offering a semblance of immortality (虚拟的永生).

龙源期刊网 http://www.qikan.com.cn

Researchers are confident that technology will soon be able to track every waking moment of your life. Whatever you see and hear, all that you say and write, can be recorded, analyzed and added to your personal chronicles (履历). By the year 2030, it may be possible to catch your nervous (神经) systems through electrical activities, which would also keep your thoughts and emotions. Researchers at the laboratories of British Telecommunications have given the name of this idea as Soul Catcher. Small electronic equipment will make preparations for Soul Catcher. It would use a wearable supercomputer, perhaps in a wristwatch, with wireless links to micro sensors under your scalp (头皮) and in the nerves that carry all five sensory signals. So wearing a video camera would no longer be required.

At first, the Soul Catcher’s companion system—the Soul Reader—might have trouble copying your thoughts in complete details. Even in 2030, we may still be struggling to understand how the brain is working inside, so reading your thoughts and understanding your emotions might not be

possible. But these signals could be kept for the day when they can be transferred to silicon circuits to revitalize minds everlasting entities (永生实体). Researchers can only wonder what it will be like to wake up one day and find yourself alive inside a machine.

For people who choose not to live in silicon, semblance of immortality would not be as useless as they thought. People would know their lives would not be forgotten, but would be kept a record of the human race forever. And future generations would have a much fuller understanding of the past. History would not be controlled by just the rich and powerful, Hollywood stars, and a few thinkers in the upper society.

39. The main idea of this passage is that. A. human beings long for living forever

B. there are many difficulties in making the Soul Catcher C. people can live forever as technology develops

D. the invention of Soul Catcher has great importance 40. According to this passage, a Soul Catcher will be.

A. a new machine on which research measures have already been made B. a new invention in order to catch and keep human’s thoughts C. made by British scientists to offer something that looks like living forever

龙源期刊网 http://www.qikan.com.cn

D. made of silicon circuits which can catch people’s nervous activity 41. We can infer from the passage that semblance of immortality is.

A. to be a reality sooner or later B. far from certain

C. just an idea that couldn’t t be realized at all D. a fading hope

42. The meaning of the underlined word “revitalize” in the fourth paragraph is close to. A. make deadB. make famous C. make knownD. make active C

Even as Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda wrapped up a tired appearance before Congress, the head of the world’s largest automaker wasn’t leaving his problems behind.

Toyota faces a criminal investigation by federal lawyers in New York. The company is now being investigated. Its US dealerships in difficulty now are facing repairs to potentially millions of customer cars that have been recalled. The company is offering customers money back for rental cars and other expenses.

Its lawyers are busy preparing to cope with lawsuits. A new hearing will be conducted. And the cost to Toyota’s reputation is only now starting.

Despite back-to-back hearings thisweek, left to be said were a better explanation for slow actions to deal with the faults and believable promises that the problems that led to sudden, unintended accelerations will be fixed.

Toyoda said those changes were being made nearly around the clock, but during three hours of often tense questions and answers he repeated that there was no link to the vehicle’s electronic systems.

龙源期刊网 http://www.qikan.com.cn

Many drivers making complaints against Toyota and the government say their acceleration problems had nothing to do with floor mat interference (油门踏板故障) or sticky gas pedals (刹车). Outside experts have suggested electronic problems.

House lawmakers expressed serious criticism on Toyoda, the grandson of the company’s founder.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is seeking records on Toyota’s recalls and is conducting its own review on whether electronics were behind the car faults. NHTSA also continues to look into steering complaints from drivers of the popular Corolla model. Toyota has recalled 8. 5 million cars, more than 6 million of them in the United States. It may be a while before car buyers believe that Toyota really makes safe cars.

Toyota’s January sales already fell 16 percent even as most other automakers jumped back from last year’s bad results. Analyst Koji Endo of Advanced Research Japan in Tokyo said he expects February sales, due out next week, to be down 30 percent to 40. Toyota’s sales problem could continue beyond that.

It will take some time to feel the full effect of this, he said. 43. The best title for this passage is.

A. Toyota is in troubleB. Toyota is under hearing C. Toyota is finishedD. Toyota is still running 44. What is the purpose of the hearing?

A. America hopes that Toyota apologizes to the US customers. B. America wants to get Toyota out of the US market. C. America wants to help Toyota out of difficulty.

D. America hopes that Toyota admits their cars have electronic system problem. 65. What can we infer from the passage? A. Toyota provides very good post sale service. B. Toyota’s biggest market is in the United States.

龙源期刊网 http://www.qikan.com.cn

C. Toyota will be closed soon.

D. Toyota’s dealership in the US will all be closed.

46. Why does Toyota recall cars and offer customers money back for rental cars and other expenses?

A. It tries to avoid the maximum damages to the company. B. It is big company and has means to fix every problem. C. It’s part of post service.

D. It’s a way to compete in auto market. D

The first field season is now over at the hut village of the workmen who built the tombs in the Valley of the Kings. However, the archaeologists working on the excavation (挖掘) have found that they still have a great deal to do. The sun, the wind and tourists have left their mark on the village, originally discovered by Bernard Bruyhre in 1935.

“From our modern perspective, it is upsetting to see how the village was first excavated and then left to be destroyed. Passers-by have used the huts as rubbish dumps and restrooms,” says Jaana Toivari—Viitala, a teacher at the University of Helsinki. “Fortunately, while we still have some surface cleaning to do, conservation are off to a good start.”

The hut village offers rare insight into everyday life in ancient Egypt.

“In the early twentieth century, archaeologists were only interested in the tombs of kings. The workmen’s huts they discovered were seen as a necessary evil in the quest for the real treasures.” “Now several international research groups on different excavations are examining everyday life and work in the Valley of the Kings. This seems to be a trend in archaeology right now.” Toivari-Viitala says.

Her research group wants to find out why the hut village was built on the slope of a

mountain, halfway between the construction site and Deir-el-Medina. They are also interested in how many workers lived in the village at a time, when they lived there, and what their role was in the construction work.

龙源期刊网 http://www.qikan.com.cn

“Comparing the names found in the village and in Deir-el-Medina provides useful information. Judging from the construction methods, settlement in the village can be divided into two separate periods: the initial settlement and a later one.”

For the time being, much is up to guessing, but Toivari-Viitala believes that the coming four field seasons, three months each, will see results.

“The working conditions are not nearly as difficult as I thought they would be. The cool winds in the mountains nicely alleviate the heat.”

The research group working on the “Workmen’s huts in the Theban mountains” project is planning to return to the Valley of the Kings in October.

47. What does the passage mainly talk about? A. The hut village in the Valley of the Kings. B. The excavation of the tombs in the Valley.

C. The archaeologists working on the excavation. D. Everyday life and work in the Valley of the Kings.

48. Which of the following is NOT true of the hut village according to the passage?

A. It has been damaged a lot. B. It can tell us a lot about ancient Egypt. C. It has attracted archaeologists’ attention.

D. It has a lot of real treasures somewhere in it.

49. What’s the new trend in archaeology right now according to Toivari-Viitala? A. Being interested in the tombs of kings.

B. Examining everyday life and work in the Valley of the Kings.

龙源期刊网 http://www.qikan.com.cn

C. Using the huts as rubbish dumps and restrooms. D. Guessing what the result will be beforehand. 50. We can infer from the passage that.

A. people know little about the hut village by now

B. the workmen’s huts were not discovered until very recently C. the research group working on the workmen’s huts will suffer a lot D. the hut village is much more valued by archaeologists than the tombs

请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的单词。 注意:每个空格只填1个单词。

Compared with soccer fans worldwide, Brazilian fans react to disappointing results in a more or less average way. Although violent incidents do occur from time to time, these fortunately have been purely local in character and should not be seen as representative. Fans in Brazil usually support their teams with great enthusiasm. Most clubs encourage the organization of groups of fans who bring their own musical bands and banners to the stadium in order to cheer on the team they favor. Such groups adopt their own names, have their own leaders and wear their team’s colors to the games.Since they are easily identifiable, the groups tend to adopt attitudes that will not reflect negatively on the team of their choice.

Traditionally, supporters of one team sit well away from people rooting for the other side. Occasionally fistfights do break out in the grandstands during a game, but again these are relatively rare incidents, usually of little consequence. It also happens that small groups of disgruntled (不满的) fans may shout less than flattering comments at players who have not lived up to their expectations, or at a referee whose decisions they consider harmful to their team. Again, such behavior is usually confined to a very small group of people or to individuals and cannot be considered typical of the public behavior of fans in general. Given the passionate excitement that the game of soccer generates among Brazilians, it must be said that Brazilian spectators are well behaved overall, particularly if compared with soccer fans in some other parts of the world

龙源期刊网 http://www.qikan.com.cn

Perhaps the best example of sportsmanlike behavior by the Brazilian pubic was the reaction of the 220,000 fans who crowded Marianna Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on 16 July 1950 to watch Brazil play the final game of the World Cup against underdog Uruguay. A tie would have given the home team the coveted (渴望的) Jules Rimet Cup. Brazil scored first, but the Uruguayan team fought courageously to tie the game and then went on to score again and become the world champions.

Brazilian fans were understandably heartbroken, but there was never any sign of disrespect toward the winners or, perhaps more important, toward the losers.

One possible version:

From the picture we can see that many branches of a tree, which stand for different kinds of abilities in school education, have been cut off by a strong saw. Only the smaller branch “study” is saved.

It in fact reflects an educational practice in some schools, where the goal of education is limited to study only. To make room and save time for study, activities for developing students’ organizing ability, communication ability, practicing ability and so on are all considered unimportant and therefore removed.

From my point of view, this kind of education is quite unqualified. A good education should focus on one’s overall development. Therefore, necessary measures must be taken to stop this kind of education. On one hand, education authorities must change their evaluation standards to guide schools back into the correct direction. On the other hand, students themselves should be responsible for their own development and seize every opportunity to broaden their abilities. I believe by doing so, things will be better.
