For many years we have been using disposal plastic bags when we do the shopping, and most often these bags are offered by the shops for free. This, undoubtedly, has brought us great convenience in our daily life.
However, its disadvantages are also very apparent. For one thing, the plastic bags are mostly indecomposable in the natural state so that with the increasing use of these bags, it will bring about the so-called “white pollution” to the environment. For another, a large proportion of the plastic bags fail to meet the requirements for healthy products, which means the more we use them, the more likely we are to suffer in health.
Therefore, limiting the use of disposable plastic bags is of great significance. Firstly, this policy can reduce pollution and save a lot of resources at the same time. Secondly, it can also create a healthier environment for people. In short, we should do our best to limit the use of plastic bags for ourselves and for the next generation.
Limiting the Use of Disposable Plastic Bags
Disposable plastic bags were once widely used in China. When we went shopping at supermarkets, shopping assistants often provided free plastic bags for our convenience. For most of us, life without them seemed unimaginable.
However, disposable plastic bags do bring severe damage to our environment. People usually threw them away after use, and because they are hard to decompose, these plastic products will exist for a long time. This is an immediate threat to our earth.
Nowadays, the government has passed relevant regulations for limiting the use of disposable plastic bags : they are not free any more. As a result, people are changing their behavior: paper and clothing bags that has vanished for a long time come back to our daily life. It is true that by limiting its usage, everyone will contribute some effort to the improvement of the environment.
Green Consumption
The conception of green consumption has gradually become popular in China. More and more green foods make their appearance on the marker and more and more people are becoming conscious of environmental protection.
However, there still exist quite a few difficulties in the further promotion of this green consumption. On the one hand, many people are still not quite clear of the advantages of green food. On the other hand, driven by high profits, many fake green foods are found in the marker. Moreover, many consumers don‟t want to pay extra money for the green foods.
There may be several ways to solve these problems. Firstly, the government should supervise the good quality strictly to protect the consumer‟s benefit. Secondly, the conception of green consumption should be further promoted and emphasized. Thirdly, the government should work together with the manufactures to make the price more reasonable.
Recreational Activities
With the development of the society, in people‟s daily life, there are various recreational activities apart from studying or working, ranging from Karaoke or dancing to computer games or sports games.
Such activities are beneficial as well as harmful to us, depending on how they are undertaken by us. On one hand, recreational activities can help not only build our body and mind but also improve our communication skills, because most of these activities are done with others. On the other hand, if we spend too much time on these recreational activities such as singing, dancing and computer games, we might fail to concentrate on our studying and working , which in turn may lead to further bad consequences.
As far as I‟m concerned, recreational activities should be done within a certain limit so that we can keep a proper balance between our recreations and studying or working life.
Recreational Activities
In the era of information and technology, there are all kinds of recreational activities. Some people think those recreational activities are great and necessary, because they can help people relax from the hard work and study. Some of the activities, such as hiking, jogging, can help people relax physically; while some of them, such as surfing the Internet , can help people relax mentally.
However, other people hold that so many kinds of recreational activities may have a bad effect on our lives. Some people may not resist some temptations from those activities, and indulge themselves in those activities. At last they are lured away from their study or their work.
In my opinion , we should pay more attention to the advantages of various recreational activities and make the most of them. Meanwhile, we should learn how to use those activities positively and make them a helpful tool for our development.
The Internet
In the era of information and technology, the Internet has played an important role in our society. However, people‟s opinions are still divided on this point. Those who are in favor of the Internet claim that it has a lot of advantages. Firstly, information searching is no longer a tough job with the help of all kinds of search engines. Secondly, we can contact friends or business partners via e-mails or software such as Internet Meeting and Yahoo Messenger.
Those who are opposed to the Internet hold that its disadvantages are numerous. In the first place, the Internet costs considerable time, money and energy, especially for those with less self-control. In the second place, increasing young people are indulges in online games and even pornography, which are extremely harmful to their development,
In my opinion, its pros outweigh the cons. The past twenty years witnessed the fast development of the Internet along with the national economy. A brighter future is awaiting us if we make good use of the Internet.
What electives to choose
At present, many universities offer a variety of elective courses and many college students prefer to have electives in their spare time.
The students choose different types of electives for the following reasons. To start with, many students want to get another degree besides their own, so that they can have more advantages when they seek a job in the future. Secondly, some students want to learn anything now. The science students, for example, want to know about Shakespeare while the art students want to learn how a vehicle works and how to deal with it when it breaks down.
As for me, I don‟t care about the degree. I just want to obtain some necessary skills to make my college life worthwhile. What I‟m concerned most is how to own more skills that may be necessary for my future.
What Electives to Choose
With the remarkable educational reform and the increasing students‟ demand, universities strive to offer a variety courses for students to choose. Some higher institutes provide the optional course of cross-cultural communication, and some colleges have computer science on the curriculum of elective courses.
There are numerous reasons for students‟ selection of the courses. In the first place, students tend to take personal interest into consideration when they opt for an elective course. Possibly, that‟s why cross-cultural communication course is so prevailing on campus. Additionally, some students may choose to learn a certain course in order to obtain an extra certificate for their job hunting after graduation .Last but not least , to make up for their required credits is another universal reason as students select a course at random.
As far as I am concerned, I‟m inclined to choose electives based on both the value of the courses and the interest of my own. I am taking geographic research and discovery course in that I‟ve been greatly keen on science since I was a kid.
Youngsters’ Worship
Nowadays, star-worshiping is popular among teenagers, especially many university students. Why? When it comes to the symptoms of worshipping a star, the main factor I‟d like to mention is imitation. With a blind love for their idols, teenagers firmly believe that their choices are the best things in life. As a result, the stars‟ clothes, hairstyles and hobbies as well as their behaviors in public, are closely observed or followed, though, to some extent, they may be improper or even ridiculous sometimes.
In my opinion, having idols is not a bad thing. However, we should make it cleat who are the real „heroes”. As far as I am concerned, the real heroes are those who are making the most contributions to our society, such as teachers, doctors and scientists. As students we should learn from them. Only in this way can we become useful men and be real popular stars in the future.

A Letter to the University President on the Seat Occupation
Dear Mr. President,
I‟m one of the students who hate the seat occupation very deeply. I hope this letter can remind you of the unhealthy behavior and return the fine study environment.
Seat occupation has been one of the most typical phenomena that we witness and experience on campus every day. Seat occupation has the following side effects. In the first place, it can result in an intense atmosphere among students. In addition, it can dilute the quality of our university education which stresses not only academic achievements but also moral culture. Last but not least, it can spoil the international image of China and the Chinese people as a whole.
So I‟d like to put forward a suggestion to solve the problem, that is, increasing investment on construction of infrastructure (classroom buildings, library, dormitory and canteen). All in all, we should have an objective view on seat occupation and try to create a relatively harmonious and friendly environment for all university students.
Sincerely yours, Peter
On the Spring Festival Gala
The coming of the Chinese Lunar New Year puts forward a long-lasting debate ---the necessary of holding the CCTV Spring Festival Gala, which is increasingly difficult to cater for all tastes. Some people deem that the Spring Festival Gala should be canceled or replaced by other programs, especially the young people who focus their attention on other new forms of celebration instead of immersing themselves in TV. While others, mainly the mid-aged and the senior, view this gala as an annual essence on the traditional Chinese Spring Festival Eve, when they will all have a restless night and glue their eyes on the television.
I am not supportive of the view that the gala should be canceled. Undoubtedly, it needs some improvements to win more favors form its young audiences. But in view of its established status and its vital role in the celebration of the Spring Festival , the gala deserves a period to perfect itself.
On the Spring Festival Gala
Many people love the CCTV Spring Festival Gala, because it involves all kinds of programs. No matter what you do and how old you are, you can always find something to make your day. Cross talks and other comic performances bring people a lot of laughter and famous stars‟ showing up adds up more fun and excitement.
While others claim that the CCTV Spring Festival Gala should be cancelled. They are complaining about its lack of originality and its dominant status on TV on that very special day. They also think focus on this time-consuming program disturbs family members‟ communication and prohibits them from attending more meaningful activities.
I think it unnecessary to cancel the CCTV Spring Festival Gala, for many people still have a strong feeling for it. But the program organizers should definitely try harder to figure out some more interesting and original programs catering to the change of the audience‟ taste.
Celebrating Spring Festival on the Internet
Nowadays, for young people, celebrating the most important Chinese holiday, Spring Festival, on the internet seems to have more attraction. However, people‟s opinions are still divided on this point.
Those who hold that celebrating Spring Festival on the Internet is fashionable believe that everything is changing with the development of Internet. Of course, the way of celebrating Spring Festival is no exceptional. For example, people can set off firecrackers, watch the Festival Eve Gala and have a chat via QQ or MSN with friends or relatives in foreign countries. But other people believe that celebrating Spring Festival on the Internet neglects interpersonal relationship and hurts people‟s health for long-time surfing online.
To my thinking, celebrating Spring festival on the Internet is only a kind of compensation to the traditional celebration. We should combine the traditional and fashionable celebrating ways properly.
On Students’ Selecting Lecturers
Recently, some universities have begun allowing students to choose the lecturers for some courses. This is no doubt a creative and bold more.
There are many reasons responsible for this brand new change. Firstly, students are convinced that teachers should not only be knowledge but also responsible enough to be qualified. Secondly, they think lecturers should have their own styles, and it is very important to make their classes more interesting. The last but not the least, the school is trying to figure out new ways to make education more efficient.
This change can lead to both benefits and problems. On the one hand, more outstanding lecturers are found in this way, therefore, the students can learn more efficiently. On the other hand, schools can give too much power to students so that they may avoid some less interesting but necessary courses. So the schools still need to do some adjustments to make this reform work better.
On Students’ Selecting Lecturers
Nowadays many students universities entitle students to choose lecturers freely for some courses, which is welcomed by most students, and is becoming the focus of the students and lecturers concern. There are many factors which will influence students‟ selecting lecturers.
Firstly of all, it is generally accepted that a lecturer‟s professional knowledge and ability is the most important factor, since students choose his courses to learn knowledge. Moreover, quite a few students think teaching methods and skills are essential to a good lecturer. A lecturer must know how to teach. In addition, a lecturer‟s sense of humor is also an important factor many students will consider.
Undoubtedly, freely choosing of lecturers is very beneficial to both lecturers and students. On one hand, it can prove a good chance for lecturers to prove and show their ability. On the other hand, in this way, students can choose lecturers they like and obtain more initiative in learning. However, since it is a free choice, a small number of excellent lecturers will become the focus of most students, which will lead to an unreasonable class size and influence teaching effect seriously.
Students’ Rating of Their Teachers
It has become as common in colleges and universities for students to grade teachers as for teachers to grade students.
This, however, has caused great controversy. Those who are in favor of the rating system hold that since students attend the teachers‟ classes everyday, they should have their opinion about their teachers‟ effectiveness. Others who are strongly against it claim that students‟ rating is easy to administer and score, but it is also easy to abuse. There is mush more to teaching than what is shown on students‟ rating forms.
I think students‟ rating of their teachers is necessary, but it should be conducted in a way that can really shed meaningful light on teachers‟ performance. Instead of rating the teachers‟ knowledge on the subject, students should be asked to estimate what they themselves have leaned in a course, and to report on such things as the teachers‟ ability to communicate with students, his relationship with students, and his ability to arouse interest in the subject.

Everyone is welcome to the donation to show your love for the poor children. To make a Children‟s Day donation or for more information about Project Hope, please check out the Website of Project Hope or contact the Students‟ Union by the number 010-1234567.
Should the University Campus be Open to Tourism?
Nowadays, many famous university campuses have become popular tourism spots. Every year thousands of middle school students and their parents visit these famous universities such as Qing Ha University and Peking University.
People have different opinions about this phenomenon. On the one hand, some people believe that visiting famous universities can bring more helpful information to the middle school students to strengthen their resolution. On the other hand, some people hold that tourism is damaging to the intellectual atmosphere in the university.
In my opinion, the tourism to the universities is not a bad thing. Enrolling in a famous university is a dream for every student. Getting access to a place they dream about can be a big thrill and encouragement to them. Plus , people usually visit the campus during vacations, and this is not a big threat to the intellectual atmosphere there.
Should the University Campus be Open to Tourism?
There is a heated debate over whether the university campus should be open to tourists, as more and more people list famous universities as tourists attractions. It is commonly accepted that university campus should embrace tourists from across the country. In contrast, others think that the university campus should be closed to tourists.
Those who hold the first opinion suggest that the university is mainly funded by the state and taxpayers have the right to look around the university. In their view, the tourists, both parents and prospective students, can enjoy the beautiful scenery as well as the academic, cultural and historical atmosphere during their visits. However, others think the interests of the university and its students should be taken into account. They argue that too many tourists will add a burden to the security department of the university and destroy the quiet environment for the students to study effectively.
Considering one after another, I stand on the side of the former idea. First of all, a university should be an open place and instill the spirit of openness in its students. Furthermore, in our country, it is the people who pay the tax and support the university. Thirdly, the university should improve itself to meet the increasing demands. Therefore, the university campus should welcome all tourists.
Should cars be allowed into college campus?
With our country‟s economy develops faster and faster, private cars come out in large numbers. Cars are not unusual on campus as well. To curb this situation, some universities forbid mobile vehicles entering the campus.
In a sense, cars do not take up students‟ space for study. But it actually affects their daily life and study. For instance, crowed of cars may make noises and emit filthy gas. And the campus is jammed with lines of cars and seems to be a big parking lot instead of an academic institute. So cars have been strictly prohibited on many college campuses.
As for as I am concerned, I agree that cars are not allowed into college campus. For one thing, Campus should be a place for students to enjoy their study, not a parking lot and a place where students show off their luxurious cars. For another, mobile vehicles on campus will represent a threat to students‟ safety.
Teacher’s day
The Teacher‟s Day will come soon. At first, I want to extend my greeting and best wishes to my dear teachers.
I still remember the year when I failed the college entrance examinations. I was feeling lost, and I had no idea about what my life is going to be. My teacher came to me, and she said she understand how I felt inside at that time. She also said that it was very common that students who were like me would go through a very hard time. She told me that failure was a part of life, which was not the end but a new beginning. And she encouraged me to go back to the school to start anew. I was convinced in the end and decided to give another try.
Now I‟ve graduated from college and have got a very good job. I know all my success owes to my kind teacher. I‟ll work harder and never give up again.
A quarrel with my roommate
Weeks age, I had a quarrel with one of my roommates with whom I live in a small room. That day one of my roommates brought in a very large suitcase and placed it under her bed, but days later she found something wrong with her suitcase. As we live on the ground floor, her case soon got wet. She took it out and, after drying it up, she just put it on her desk because she had no other choice. I happened to be opposite her desk and her suitcase was so large that it not only occupied the whole of her desk but half of mine as well.
I was very much annoyed, so I angrily pushed it forward without first talking to her about it. I pushed a bit too hard and the case fell off her desk, messing up everything. On seeing this, she flew into a temper and angrily shouted at me. The quarrel started and lasted about two hours.
When I calmed down days later, I thought over the quarrel and began to see something. I should have talked to her about it first and then worked with her to find a solution to the problem. Living in a room with limited space, we should learn to get on well with one another.
A campaign speech
Hello, everyone. My name is Jones. I‟m a sophomore from the English Department. I‟m very excited and glad to run for the president of the Students‟ Union. I‟m good at communication and organizing, and I like to help others. I‟m good at sports as well, and I believe that health is very important for taking a job.
If I become the president, I will try my best to serve my fellow students well. On the one hand, I‟ll try to organize more sports and art matches to improve the communication between students. On the other hand, I‟ll add more interesting lectures‟ knowledge and vision.
With your help and support, I believe that I can offer you my sincere and excellent performances. Thank you.
