You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

Question 31 to 35 are based on the following passage:

Why do some birds flock when they feed? Many researchers say birds forage(搜寻食物) in groups to protect themselves from being attacked. Since there are a greater number of eyes on the lookout, individual birds can spend more time eating and less time worrying about being eaten.

Thomas Caraco, a biologist at the University of Rochester, recently studied yellow-eyed juncos(北美雀科小鸟) over a three-day period to see how they altered their feeding habits in the presence of a trained Harris hawk. When Caraco released the bird, it swooped(飞扑) over the juncos, appearing to attack. The birds reacted by huddling together in a flock. And , despite the threat from above, they spent less time scanning and more time eating the food Caraco provided than they did when foraging individually.

To see how the juncos would react if they had some where to hide, Caraco placed a Christmas tree in the feeding area. The birds became even freer.

One negative note; when the number of birds in the flock increased beyond a certain point, they began to fight. The dominant juncos hogged the food and the meek birds lost out.

31. The passage says that . A) many birds don’t like to forage in groups

B) juncos are always ready to attack when they are together C) juncos foraging individually will spend more time scanning D) juncos like the food provided by Caraco best

32. Caraco’s Christmas-tree experiment shows that . A) birds are not afraid of trees

Questions 36 to40 are based on the following passage:

In sport the sexes are separate. Women and men do not run or swim in the same races. Women are less strong than men. That at least is what people say. Women are called ‘the weaker sex’, or , if men want to please them, ‘the fair sex’. But boys and girls are taught together at schools and universities. There are women who are famous Prime Ministers, scientists and writers. And women live longer than men. A European woman can expect to live until the age of 74, a man only until he is 68. Are women’s bodies really weaker?

The fastest men can run a mile in under 4 minutes. The best women need 4.5 minutes. Women’s times are always slower than men’s, but some facts are a surprise. Some of the fastest women swimmers today are teenage girls. One of them swam 400 metres in 4 minutes 21.2 seconds when she was only 16. The first ‘Tarzan’ in films was an Olympic swimmer, Johnny Weissmuller. His fastest 400 metres was 4 minutes 59.1 seconds, which is 37.9 seconds slower than a girl 50 years later! This does not mean that women are catching men up. Conditions are very different now, and sport is much more serious. It is so serious that some women athletes are given hormone(荷尔蒙) injections. At the Olympics a doctor has to check whether the women athletes are really women or not. It seems sad that sport has such problems. Life can be very complicated when there are two separate sexes!

36.In this passage the author implies that . A) women are weaker than men, but faster B) women are slower than men ,but stronger

C) men are not always stronger and faster than women D) men are faster and stronger than women

37.“That at least is what people say.” Means people . A) say other things too B) don’t say this much C) say this but may not think so D)only think this 38.Which of the following is true?

A) Boys and girls study separately everywhere. B) Women do not run or swim in races with men. C) Famous Prime Ministers are women.

D) Men can expect to live longer than women in Europe. 39.Women are called ‘the weaker sex’ because .

A) women do as much work as men

B) people think women are weaker than men C) sport is easier for men than for women D)in sport the two sexes are always together 40.What problems does sport have?

A) Some women athletes are actually men.

B) Some women athletes are given hormone injections. C) Women and men do not run or swim in the same races.

D)It is difficult to check whether women athletes are really women.

Question 41 to 45are based on the following passage:

Distance learning has moved far away from the traditional correspondence course aimed at the individual student working alone. The global reach of the Internet makes it possible to unite geographically scattered students in a virtual classroom. Methods such as multimedia,

video-conferencing(视频会议) and the Internet increasingly allow students both to proceed at their own pace, and to interact with one another and their teachers.

Even without taking technology to its limits, the idea of education as a lifelong process is catching on throughout the industrialized world. Already, working adults who pursue their studies part-time make up roughly half of the students taking college courses in the United States.

However, there is debate in scholarly circles about how far the new technology should be used for teaching academic subjects in which personal contacts between teacher and student are still vital. Britain’s Open University, a world leader in distance education, for example, has

embraced information technology cuatiously(谨慎地), believing it to be no shubtitute(替代物) for books and the exchange of ideas at live tutorials and summer schools.

But the Open University is also moving with the times. It has set up a “knowledge media institute” to explore ways of adopting information technology. Some teachers are concerned about this trend, arguing that the heavy investment that students are expected to make in computer and communications equipment contradicts(与……矛盾) the concept of “Open”. Cost, of course, is an important factor in many developing countries, where few people have computers or even phones. Rather than uniting the world, the new technologies could lead to societies of information haves and have-nots.

41. Scholarly circles’ attitude toward distance learning can best be decribed as ____________. A. disapproving B. cautious C. sarcastic D. indifferent 42. We can infer from the passage that __________________. A. students accept new concepts more easily than teachers.

B. students are reluctant to invest in equipment for distance learning

C. distance learning is sure to take the place of traditional higher education D. there is still room for distance learning to develop

43. Distance learning is different from the traditional correspondence course in that _____________.

A. it requires the individual student to work alone B. it enables all the students to work at the same pace

C. it allows students to discuss with one another and their teachers

D. it enalbes geographically scattered students to study in the same physical classroom

44. In Paragraph 2, “catching on” means _______________. A. become practical B. become popular C. become acceptable D. become creative

45. Some teachers are concerned about distance learning because ______________. A. it may lead to an information gap between the rich and the poor B. it contradicts the traditional concept of education C. it will take the place of books and teachers

D. it requires universities to make a heavy investment

Part IV Translation from English into Chinese.

When we arrived at the China Resources Building, Han turned to face me, his face suddenly serious, “Of course it will be good for Beijing and good for China. The whole world will be

watching. Something like this can change the way people think. It can change the whole country.” I weighed his words as I fished out a 20-yuan note. His playful smile returned as he handed me my change and asked, in that hard-earned English, “Would you like a receipt?”
