One midnight, a little girl woke up to pass water. She by herself got up and
down her bed, walked to the bedroom door and opened it. She looked outside and walked back, for it was so dark in the hall that she feared.
Her mother said, “Don't be afraid, honey. Take courage!”
“What's courage?” she asked, running to her mother's bed.
“Courage is the brave breath,” her mother answered.
“Mum, do you have courage?”
“Certainly.”
The girl held out her little hands, saying, “Mum, blow some of your breath of courage to me.”
After her mother blew out two mouthfuls of breath into her little cold hands, the little girl clenched her fists(握拳) nervously, afraid that the “breath of courage” would run away. Then with her fists clenched, she walked out of the bedroom towards the bathroom with nothing to fear.
Her mother said to herself, “It will be nice if someone can blow some kind of 'breath' to me. Then I can hold it in my hands too when I feel terrified or lost.”

The first part of a new science-fiction series(系列剧) was shown on NBC last night. Star Trek is about a spacecraft(宇宙飞船) which travels faster than the speed of light. The show is developed from three ideas about the 22nd century. First, we'll find other life forms great tools which will make amazing things possible.
Let's think about these predictions. If we find life forms on other planets, will they be intelligent? I hope so. But we human beings might not be friendly—I don't think we'll believe in the idea of peace one hundred years from now. But this is science fiction, so we can be optimistic! And Star Trek's idea of life in the future is \"communicators\". And we will be able to have conversations with people who are on because you'll have an electronic notebook. And if you get ill, the doctor won't have to examine you—a machine will \"read\" your body. The strangest machine includes a \"teleport\" which will take people to a different place in a second!
The ideas are interesting, and in my opinion there's only one problem with
star trek: the acting. The TV company(公司) will have to get better actors. If they
do that, the show might be a success. If the acting doesn't improve, Star Trek won't last for more than one series. Of course, my prediction may be wrong. I can't see into the future!
94. What is Star Trek?
A. A TV play. B. A popular song.
C. A spacecraft. D. An alien.
95. What does the underlined word \"optimistic\" mean?
A. Lucky and happy. B. Hopeful and confident.

A. The life forms on other planets are stupid.
B. Interesting ideas make a new series popular.
C. The new series might not be successful without better actors.
97. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. Aliens on Other Planets. B. The Idea of Human Life.
C. A Science Fiction. D. A New Series About Future.

Next time you're in a public place, take a look around you, and count how many people are using their phones. I can tell you that it is probably more than half, whether you're in a bus, in a café or simply walking down the street.
I'm not saying that I am not an example of this, but I wonder how people can spend so much time on their phones without actually talking to anyone in particular. We can now do almost anything with a phone. But has it gone too far? We spend too much time on our mobiles but not enough time talking to people in real life.
Last time I visited London, I traveled by subway. I noticed that almost everybody else was on their phones except those who were asleep. People were playing games, reading articles and listening to music.
Recently, my smart phone broke and I had to use an old basic phone just to keep in touch with my family and friends. I could only send text messages,
make calls and play one game with it. And I loved it. I loved being free from the Internet, and I really didn't mind what my friends were doing or what the latest news was. I could enjoy my time watching the people around me and seeing what was going on.
However, I knew that as soon as I got my smart phone back, I would be one of those people once again.
