The National Palace Museum (NPM) was originally founded in 1925 in the Forbidden City in Beijing, which explains why the word “Palace” is used in its name. In 1931, to avoid the ravages of the impending Japanese invasion, the collection was crated and moved from the imperial palace in Beijing to southwest China. In 1949, with civil war raging between the National government and the Communists, the Republic of China shipped about 600,000 of the most precious objects in the collection to Taiwan, establishing repositories at Yangmei in Taoyuan and Peikou in Wufeng, Taichung. It was not until 1965 when the museum was opened at its present home in the Wai-shuang-xi area of Shih-lin, Taipei.

The National Palace Museum, with its roots firmly planted and growing in Taiwan for more than half a century, has already evolved into a fully modernized museum. Not only is its hardware continually being upgraded, constant efforts are made to expand the collection, which now exceeds 690, 000 objects, making it the premier holding of Chinese art and culture in the world. Over the past years, great effort has also been expended to advance the NPM’s role in Taiwan’s Nationl Digital Archives Program. Using the latest digital technology, the NPM’s objects and their role are being given a complete makeover. Not only are exhibits becoming much more animated, digital technology in the development of cultural innovation industry is also playing a vital and multiple role in forming a new value system for the museum of the future.
